Description of Index:

The index is on c. 10 folios (some empty) at the beginning of the volume. It was probably created when the volume was bound in 1862.

The index is in the hand of one or two individuals, in 19th-century ink and pencil: there are many corrections, most of which are later additions to the first layer of the index.

Editorial comments:

This transcription is meant to be a rough addition to the TNA catalogue. As such, the transcription below does not try to be a diplomatic one, and the following editorial choices have been made:

  1. The layout has been normalised, both extralineally (across the page) and intralineally (between words). Line division is retained but normalised.

  2. Original spelling is retained, except for the transcription of long "s" as lower case "s". Superscripts are retained. Deletions are marked.

  3. Original punctuation is retained with some normalisation: underscores/ellipsis regularized to "…"; curly brackets "}" set to standard sizes; dash lengths have been regularised.

  4. Changes in ink/pencil or hand have not been marked in the transcription.

Folio/page change markers are editorial, and marked in bold in brackets: [fol. x, page y/z ]. Uncertain readings are underlined; undecipherable characters marked as "#".

Insertions on versos have been reproduced in the leftmost column in this transcription, as they invariably comment on their facing rectos.

Note on the index:

The contents of this index have not been cross-checked with the contents of SP 106/1-3, but the reference numbers seem to be correct. Please note that they give no indication of document length.

The "Reference" numbers refer to the item numbers within SP 106 vols. 1-3. Volume numbers are not here indicated, but the TNA catalogue says vol. 1 contains ciphers for individuals whose surnames being with the letters A–L, vol. 2 M–W, and vol. 3 "names unknown". Note that the item numbers are not the same as current foliation. For instance, the ciphers for Sir Thomas Smith in 1562 are given the Reference numbers 115 & 116: the ciphers are found in vol. 2, ff. 95 & 96–97.
