As a researcher, I study military intervention, strategic narratives and diplomatic communication, ethnicity in international relations, security and threat perception, and political activism in diasporic and minority communities. I also serve as the Chair of the Marist College's annual undergraduate student research conference (CURSCA)

I have published more than 20 research publications -- among them one book (Routledge, 2017) and articles in venues including International Interactions, International Journal of Press/Politics, Nationalities Papers, Nationalism and Ethnic Politics, Middle East Journal, and Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs (also see Google Scholar). I have conducted field research in the US, UK and Italy, and my work has been translated to Turkish. My former positions include: Fellow at the Academy of International Affairs, Bonn, Germany; Fellow at Bard College; Visiting Scholar at the University of Latvia; Researcher at the Lorenzo de' Medici Institute in Florence, Italy; and Associate Fellow at the Securitization for Migrant Integration (SoMI) Network initiative. 

Languages: Fluent: Latvian (native) and Russian; Intermediate: French; Beginner: Mandarin Chinese.
