Backpacking Journal

Having grown up on the Atlantic Coast, vacations for Jym were always seashore related. Moving to Northern California in 1975, he was surprised to find the Pacific too cold for swimming, although sunbathing on the beach (if protected from the wind) was ok. Fortunately, colleagues at SLAC introduced him to backpacking in the mountains. So backpacking has been part of his life since the mid-1980s. The usual pattern has been a 2-3 day trip in the spring to some relatively low mountain or state park, then a week in the High Sierra in mid-summer (the window for no snow is mid-July to early September), followed by another trip to a low lying area in early September.

To date the backpacking group has mostly consisted of a half-dozen fellow SLACers of about my age. A few youngsters have joined in, and a female or two occasionally join us.

With the advent of digital cameras, and the availability of home computers, the backpackers got into the pattern of writing up a description of their trips, complete with photos. These writeups--below--are usually posted in PDF format to cut down on the volume. With Google Sites, PDF files can only be presented in the File Cabinet template used here.

The File Cabinet template organizes files alphanumerically. The filenames have been chosen to make the order chronological.

Notes: There is no description of the Pinnacles 13 trip (May 3-5, 2013), nor of the Pt. Reyes 14 trip (April 13-15, 2014).
