CEMETERIES

Buck's Grove Cemetery, Jackson County, Kansas. Sellers, Kay F. Privately printed. 2002 [Includes birth and death dates as well as obituary publication date and newspaper.]

Denison Cemetery. A Tippinville Marker was placed in the Denison Cemetery: Tippinville, named for local merchant Andrew W. Tippin and registered as a town in 1869, was located one-half mile north of here on eight acres. Early residents settled here in the 1850s to be near wood and water. The post office was called North Cedar. In its heyday, it boasted three churches (Christian, Reformed Presbyterian, and United Presbyterian) and numerous businesses, including the county’s first cheese factory. When the Kansas City, Wyandotte and Northwestern Railroad came through at Denison in 1887, many of the wooden buildings were moved here. The town was disbanded in 1890. Marked by Jackson County Historical Society, 2007.

James Cemetery Marker: The James Crossing stone marker placed in the James cemetery is engraved as follows: James Crossing, named for Jackson James, was located one-half mile south and one-half mile west of this marker. James, born in Indiana, settled here before 1855 with his family and maintained the Soldier Creek crossing for the military road between Ft. Leavenworth and Ft. Riley. This area offered abundant spring water, shade trees with wood for fuel, and a place for the settlers to rest and prepare for the journey on west. The trading post was called “Jim Jax” before being labeled as James Crossing on early maps. The post office existed from 1862 to 1886. James established this cemetery in 1859 on the original James farm when his eight-year old son, Davis, died. Marked by Jackson County Historical Society, 2007.

Contains all of the known cemeteries of Nemaha county except Seneca City cemetery and St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church cemetery, Seneca, Kansas. Contains listings for Ontario cemetery, located on the border of Jackson and Nemaha counties.

Ontario Cemetery Marker: The Ontario marker placed in the Ontario cemetery is engraved as follows: Ontario, probably named for Ontario, Canada, was located one-half mile east of here near Elk Creek. It straddled the Jackson-Nemaha county line. Settlers came here in the 1850s, following the 39th Parallel Trail connecting Atchison, Kansas, to Denver, Colorado. The post office existed from 1862 to 1922. The Kansas City, Wyandotte, and Northwestern Railroad promoted growth in the area and existed from 1887 to 1919. A log cabin school in the late 1850s (on the Jackson county side) was replaced with a frame building in 1871 in Nemaha county as District #2 N & J. It had 106 students in 1891; it closed in 1954. A church was built in the 1890s for all denominations. It later became a Methodist church, closing in 1949. Businesses on the Nemaha side included the depot, stockyards, and elevator. Businesses on the Jackson side included a general store, blacksmith, barber shop, telephone exchange, doctors' offices, and cider mill. Marked by Jackson County Historical Society, 2007.
