The German word for eagle owl is "uhu" which gives the surname root. The old High German word for owl is ðwila. The people who lived at places where many owls lived have been called the ðwilars.

The surname was registered at the Aargau State Office in the city of Meienberg (today Sins) in 1685. Meienberg used to be a town in the in the 12th century. In the Battle of Sempach (1386), the Habsburg city of Meienberg was destroyed by Zug.
