Blue Hill

Blue Hill is an isolated mountain located in the coastal town of Blue Hill, Maine. Much of the mountain is conservation land managed by the Blue Hill Heritage Trust. Despite the communications tower near the summit, the views of the bay, islands and inland scenery are wonderful from the open bedrock summit.

How to get there from Orono, ME

Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes drive.

Take route 15 south from Brewer to the town of Blue Hill. Before reaching the village and waterfront of Blue Hill take a left on Mountain Road. There is a gravel parking area on the ridge just across from the Hayes trail head.

Hiking conditions:

There are four trails on Blue Hill: Hayes Trail, Osgood Trail, South Face Trail and the Tower Service Trail. Starting from the Morse Farm field, take Hayes Trail for a quick but fairly steep and rocky hike up to the summit. Following the blue blazes, start the descent on Osgood Trail, then connect to South Face Trail to complete the loop back to Hayes Trail. The entire loop is about two miles. Alternately, the Tower Service Trail is a more gradual ascent to the summit. There is no potable water supply on the trail. There are many wild blueberry bushes and some raspberries which can offer a taste of fresh fruit during a mid-summer hike.

Nearby attractions:

The village of Blue Hill has several restaurants and shops. There is a nice park at the end of Water Street (off Main Street) that has a picnic area, playground, and access to a small swimming beach (especially nice at high tide).
