West Nile virus to hit U.S. hard, CDC says

Texas 40 Deaths

The Texas Department of State Health Services Commissioner David Lakey said Wednesday Sept. 5, 2012 that at least 40 people have died from the virus in Texas. The state has recorded at least 495 cases of neuroinvasive West Nile, considered the most serious form of the illness because it affects the nervous system

US 118 DEATHS

So far, 1,405 serious illnesses and 118 deaths from West Nile have been reported across the country. Most are in Texas, but Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Michigan have seen substantial numbers.

Worst year 284 deaths 2002

The worst year for the mosquito-borne disease was 2002, which saw nearly 3,000 severe cases and 284 deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
