Lipitor went generic (atorvastatin) in the USA - well sort of. Time Magazine reports on the manuevers of Pfizer to keep Lipitor generics off the pharmacy shelves.The Wall Street Journal reports that Pfizer is matching the generic price of Lipitor. On a personal note, I don't know what the concern is about generic forms of Lipitor (i.e., not effective). I've been taking for several years (I live overseas) and it works as well as Lipitor according to my blood tests. Here is also some good news that statins are safe.

Lipitor (atorvastatin) has gone generic in some parts of the world (e.g., Liponorm). For example, exclusivity of Lipitor in Canada expired July 19, 2010. For those in the US in 2011 sometime - maybe Nov 30th. See Fortune's The War Over Lipitor. In August 2011, Pfizer expressed its desire to sell Lipitor over the counter citing a Wall Street Journal article "Pfizer Looks at Lipitor Over the Counter". I hope we don't get more Lipitor TV commercials.

Pfizer is getting ready to let Lipitor go generic - sales reps are bracing for job losses:Pfizer Cuts Reps Before Lipitor Patent Expires. We should see at least one generic in US by end of year - see Lipitor generic lawsuits settled. It is countdown time though Pfizer isn't taking this date without a battle for example blocking Merck's attempt to create a combination drug with Lipitor.
