Global Member Care
Volume Two
Crossing Sectors for Serving Humanity
Kelly O’Donnell and Michèle Lewis O’Donnell—Editors
This section contains several materials in the Reference and Resource sections at the end of the book chapters. We have included them below in order to help you access their web links more easily. Additional/new materials are found in the Vol 2 Updates section on this website. The electronic version of the book is also available on Amazon. There is a doc version of the resources on this page HERE.
Note: Many of these resources, like the chapters included in the book, could easily fit under the heading of “Global Integration”--how we integrate our life/work into some of the tough issues facing humanity in line with our values/beliefs. In fact, the title of volume two in the Global Member Care series could actually be Global integration in Member Care: Crossing Sectors for Serving Humanity.

Editors’ Notes
The health, human rights, and protection of all humans is crucial. As stated in the physician’s
oath of the original Geneva Declaration by the World Medical Association (1948): “I will
maintain the utmost respect for human life from the time of conception, even under threat,
I will not use my medical knowledge contrary to the laws of humanity.” This section of the
Declaration, as currently amended, reads, “I will maintain the utmost respect for human life”
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration_of_Geneva). Note also the need to safeguard all human life emphasized in the preambles of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child (1959) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989): “The child, by reason of his physical and mental immaturity, needs special safeguards and care, including appropriate legal protection, before as well as after birth.”

Editors’ Notes
For perspectives and resources related to “mental health as mission” (mhM) see the
Resource Update, September 2012, archived at http://www.membercareassociates.org.Here are
some of the summary thoughts in this Update on the relevance of mental health for mission
and vice versa. “mhM extends member care’s core emphasis of well-being/effectiveness for mission/aid workers and embodies the joint efforts to serve humanity via supportive resources in the mental health sciences/disciplines. It involves increasing mhM awareness and skills . . . One of
the main applications of mhM is to further equip/support mission/aid workers who themselves
are helping people/communities in areas like domestic violence, depression, substance abuse,
traumatic stress, and emergency settings. Another application involves trained member care
workers and health workers who provide and develop direct services for people/communities
needing mental health and psychosocial support.”

Chapter 33: Humans Abusing Humans: Smuggling, Trafficking, and Abduction
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
Editors’ Notes
This chapter is an important reminder of how human beings (not simply “human resources”)
are massively abused throughout the world. Whether it be children working in
sweatshops, people relegated to indentured servitude, or forced prostitution, millions of human
beings work and live as virtual slaves of others. Human resources as a sector must continue to
acknowledge and confront this most egregious side of human resource “management.”
