Service Record Statement
My service to the community is an extension of my teaching and provides creative outlets for teacher candidates and I to learn, interact, perform, coach, problem-solve, create, alongside one another in authentic settings. Community outreach is also exposure for our program and our students. With everything we do, we know we are representing the philosophy, the face, and the branding of UNM in our communities.
Students participate in several practicum experiences where they can apply theory to practice. All teacher candidates and I Judge local and regional Science Fairs. Many invitations come from our UNM teacher graduates who are now hosting and facilitating their school’s science fairs. Oral History Family Project at McKinley and Apache Elementary School is a literacy program, where UNM teacher candidates coach third grade students through the storytelling and writing processes; Family Math Nights and Family Reading Nights at Kirtland Elementary School are opportunities for teacher candidates to plan intergenerational math and reading activities for the family; 21st Century Afterschool program grant at Blanco Elementary School focused on literacy through creative drama. These practicum experiences also balance the online courses that students are taking more of each semester. Working with students affords me the opportunity to observe them in classroom and learning settings as they draw from their own background knowledge as well as applying course content learned in methods and teacher preparation program. Teacher candidates also record their reflections on the educational EdWeb site in a closed professional learning community.
Service includes participation in:

Research Grants
The teacher documentary project is a way to capture the authentic and professional voices of teacher candidates and mentor teachers as they learn from each other as colleagues. This research assumes a more nuanced storytelling medium in sharing what UNM teachers are learning alongside their respective mentor teachers and on their own as they take over full time teaching.
