Scholarly research statement

Major theme: How nonlinear dynamics of movement systems support the use of code-like, symbolic information such as language and genetics. Psychologists have long explained perception and action in terms of internal mental models that represent incoming sensory information in equally symbolic terms (e.g., Simon, 1969; Newell, 1990). My work addresses the complementary point that dynamical processes exhibiting nonlinear interactions across scales are crucial for the use, maintenance, and change of these symbolic constraints (Pattee, 1977;2007;2013). Hence, my research purses the goal of understanding how nonlinear dynamics in movement supports the use of symbolic-informational codes in both human language use (in text and in speech) and non-human species’ group behaviors such as flocking and swarm behaviors.

Scholarly supporting themes feeding into my major research goal

  • cognitive change
  • spatial-perceptual learning
  • anticipation of unpredictable tactile and visual stimuli
  • collaborations with clinicians and biomechanists seeking to foster dexterous movement

Pedagogical themes growing out of both my scholarly work and my collaborations with students

  • research on teaching practice and communication of my own research methodologies

Scholarly research statement

Major theme

My work centers on the issue of how perceiving-acting organisms use the dynamical processes unfolding through their movement system to support the use of code-like, symbolic information. This work follows in the spirit of Howard Pattee’s (1977; 2007; 2013) insights that intelligent living systems embody a complementary balance of symbolic-informational and dynamical modes. Symbolic-informational constraints set up important boundary conditions on dynamical aspects of perception action—a point foundational for information-processing approaches to intelligent, living systems (e.g., Simon, 1969; Newell, 1990). I take it as my goal to address the other side of this complementary coin that Pattee noted, i.e., that dynamical processes are crucial for the use, maintenance, and change of these symbolic-informational constraints. This program of research centers most recently on the role that specifically nonlinear dynamics of movement-system play for this use, maintenance, and change of symbolic-informational constraints. I conduct this research towards the ultimate goal of understanding how nonlinear dynamics in movement supports the use of symbolic-informational codes in both the human case of language use (in text and in speech) and non-human case of using genetic information to coordinate flocking and swarm behaviors.

Supporting themes

In support of this central theme, my research has benefited from more foundational work examining the role of movement in various more elementary themes

—all of which elements are crucial for embedding intelligent use of codes in their various contexts. This current focus on the use of dynamics to reshape constraints benefits as well from

Despite not being linguistic, these constraints remain crucial for fostering a healthy range of movement-system dynamics in less typical cases (e.g., zero gravity or following injury). In a similarly non-basic, relatively applied portion of my scholarship, I also maintain an active interest in
