2014 Sprint Results

We had an excellent turnout for this event, with nearly 50 entries in all four categories.

I want to take this moment to thank everyone for their participation in all of the Feld Hell events in 2014.

Our 2015 event schedule is posted on the Club’s website, so go ahead and mark your calendars now.

November "Turkey Hunt" Sprint

Please allow a moment to allow me to recognize the winners of the 2014 Turkey Hunt Sprint.

However, before I get to the winners in each category, please join me in thanking our “Turkeys” for this Hunt:

David (VE3VID), Tery (KD8GNC), Pete (KZ1Z) and Helmut (DM2BPG).

This month we ended up with 29 log entries in three categories. Although there were no DX QRP entrants,

each of the other categories had at least two submissions so there was competition for each certificate.

October "Spooky" Sprint

We had an excellent turnout this month with more than 35 entries covering three categories plus one check log.

All told, nearly 1/3 of our entries this month were in the DX category, so thanks to all DX participants!

Besides the great turnout, we were also fortunate to have the Hell Michigan Group (as W1AW/8) operating from Hell, Michigan

participating in the Sprint, which helped generate even more interest in the Feld Hell mode, the Sprint, and the club as a whole.

September "Hell on Wheels" Sprint

We ended up with 25 submitted logs from six countries and in five categories.

Other DX Home QRO entries were received from Poland, Spain and Belgium. No DX QRP entries were received this month.

In the North American categories we had an unusual situation with no entries submitted from Canada.

However, we did end up with 20 entries from US members in four categories.

The results for this month’s Sprint highlight the importance of submitting your log for every Sprint;

even a single QSO is often sufficient to win a category and to earn a certificate.

August "Full Day of Hell" Sprint

In total, we had log submissions from 13 stations plus one check log, including entries in all four categories.

August "Grid Locator" Sprint

For this year’s GridLoc Sprint, we had log submissions from 15 stations plus one check log with entries covering all four categories.

July "High Road" Sprint

Despite the poor propagation, we still managed to receive a dozen log entries and actually had (limited) QSOs on all 3 bands. Both K2AL and KC2WUF reported 1 QSO on each of the 10m and 6m bands, while everyone else was limited to QSOs on 15m. We received no entries in the QRP categories this month so all activity was in the QRO categories.

June "Field Day" Sprint

Participation was pretty good with 18 entries from Europe, North America and South America submitting logs in three of the possible five categories.

There were no logs submitted for the MOBILE or SWL categories.

Note: For the Field Day Sprint, there are no separate categories for DX or North American operations; only the 5 announced categories.

The purpose of Field Day is to get out and operate using portable or emergency setups in order to communicate.

Therefore, it is fitting that our overall winner submitted his log under the HOME EMERGENCY POWER category.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Sprint and thank you to all who submitted logs.

A summary of submitted scores can be found at the end of this email for all who may be interested.

May WAAAEO (Worked All Asia, Africa, Europe, Oceania) FDOH Sprint

Please give me a moment of your attention to recognize the winners of the inaugural Worked All Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania Full Day of Hell event. In this event, US and Canadian states and provinces did not count as multipliers. Instead, only countries located in Africa, Asia, Europe or Oceania were counted as multiples.

This month’s Full Day of Hell included 30 log submissions from Spain, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Canada, United States and for the first time in recent memory, Japan; making this a truly world-wide event. As always, thanks to all who submitted logs and who worked on-air to make this a fantastic event.

May "Hamvention" Sprint

The Hamvention Sprint is a bit unusual in that we have two sessions for participation and thus the possibility of multiple winners for the event.

April New Member "Newbie" Sprint

March "Worked All Americas" FDOH Sprint

There were no DX QRO or DX QRP entrants this sprint.

March "Leprechaun" Sprint

“Leprechauns” for the Sprint: Ron (W4ALE), Paul (ON6NA), Paul (VA3PC), David (VY0/VE3VID), Lou (W8LEW), and John (KC2RXS).

David (VY0/VE3ID) was a Leprechaun for the entire Sprint, handing out not only valuable bonus points but also a rare grid square as equally rare Arctic Leprechaun!

Thanks to all of the Leprechauns for volunteering their time.

February "Bingo" Sprint

Starting with this month’s Sprint, I am adding a new certificate in addition to the first place winners of each category. This certificate will represent the OVERALL WINNER of the Sprint and will be given to the participant with the highest score, regardless of category.

There were no entrants in the DX QRP Category

January "Low Down" Sprint

Comments this month were fairly uniform regarding the poor conditions. While winter is usually a good time for activity on the 160m, 80m and 40m bands, this was not the case this time around. As we pass the solar maximum and begin our slow decline in sunspot numbers over the next few years, this Sprint may come alive with activity as propagation begins to favor these lower bands. The challenge in running a contest on these bands, especially on 160m, is finding an ideal time for all. Quite frankly, it is impossible to do so for everyone so we were forced to pick times that were best for the majority of our members and normal Sprint participants. If we do this Sprint again in future years, that is something that we will look to address again. Perhaps this Sprint is best suited for a 24 hour event rather than a two or four hour Sprint window.

There were no entrants for the DX QRP, or NA QRP categories.
