  • What “norms of behavior” do people/classes/genders follow?

  • How do people in this place relate to and depend upon each other? Are they in clans, tribes, extended families, single-parent households?

  • How "connected" are people and what is the basis of that connection or isolation?

  • Who has high status in society and why?

  • How is status reinforced or weakened? (Is it by wearing particular clothing, behavior, lifestyle choices, marriage, education, expression...) -How much "social mobility" is there? I.e., how easy is to change ones status from low to high? What are the avenues one uses to gain status? Marriage? Education? Career choice/opportunities? Adopting particular religious or political beliefs? Attaining economic power?) -Who has greater influence in society?

  • Are there different roles for men versus women?

  • What are the norms of behavior (i.e., if we examine how people behave, what behaviors are considered and expected as normal vs. abnormal?)

  • Is there marriage? Among whom? At what age? Why or why not?

  • How many people can a man/woman marry at once? Does "divorce" exist? How pervasively throughout society

  • What are typical families like? How young is normal for marriage? -- having children?

  • Do men and women have different expectations for what they can do in life? How might "peer pressure" or the expectations of others shape that life path?

  • What traits are each of the following "supposed" to have in order that they be considered "ideal": mothers, fathers, grandparents, sons, daughters, brothers and sisters?

  • What do people in this society value and respect as the personal qualities in others?

  • What is expected of the elderly?

  • What behavior is okay, and what behavior is considered NOT OKAY AT ALL!?

  • To what degree to people have "leisure time" to develop personal interests? What do people like to do with that time?

  • What attitudes do people display?
