Development of Decision Support Systems
A key line of research now deals with accurate forecasting for the EUR/USD rate with some very promising results on loads of data, during very, very volatile times (most of 2011 and 2012):
Th. Zafeiriou and D. Kalles. “Short-term Trend Prediction ofForeign Exchange Rates with a Neural-Network based Ensemble of FinancialTechnical Indicators”, International Journal on Artificial Intelligence Tools, Vol. 22, No. 3, 2013.
The basic idea is pretty simple: you generate an ensemble of fairly standard technical indicators, each of which is OK but quite modest in performance, and you use a neural network to learn which one is the biggest contributor to a succesful prediction. That way you deal effectively with drift since none of these indicators is good enough for all times.
We are now looking into integrating this technology with algorithmic trading software and into commercialising it.
It all started, however, long ago with the development of specialized decision support systems for engineering applications ...
... for the water industry:

... the tunnel construction industry:

... the power industry (this one was just a position paper, though):
