Dimitris Kalles is a Professor of “Artificial Intelligence – Applications” with the Hellenic Open University (HOU), where he is also the Director of the undergraduate study programme “Computer Science”.

He holds a Diploma in Computer Engineering and Informatics (CEID) from the University of Patras, Greece (1991). He also holds an M.Sc. (1993) and a Ph.D. (1995) in Computation from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST, today University of Manchester).

His main research interests are in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and his work also has a strong focus in Educational Technology and Software Engineering. He enjoys a strong integration of theoretical results with experimental investigation and substantial software development.

He has been collaborating with HOU since 2001 and with the Open University of Cyprus (OUC) since 2007. At HOU, he has been involved in the design and implementation of study programs and of several projects on the development of educational material and in the implementation of infrastructures for e-learning. He has taught several subjects related to Informatics and has supervised numerous undergraduate/postgraduate dissertations/theses, in HOU, OUC and CEID. At HOU, he has supervised 4 doctoral students (from enrolment to graduation). He has also served as vice-Dean for the School of Science and Technology of HOU.

He has worked as an R&D engineer and researcher with Computer Technology Institute (Patras, Greece, 1997-2000) and as a Technical Director with Ahead Relationship Mediators SA (Athens, 2000-2004, also serving as member of its BoD during 2000-2008). He has served as an expert evaluator for the European Commission, the Corallia Clusters Initiative and for several other regional, national or European organisations and consortia.

He is a member of the Hellenic Society for Artificial Intelligence, where he has served as Chairperson (2013-14); he has also served as Secretary General and as member of the Governing Council for several terms.

He was a member of the Organising Committee of the 18th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, held in July 2008 in Patras, and of the 24th International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence, held in November 2012, in Piraeus. He co-chaired the 8th Hellenic Conference on Artificial Intelligence, held in May 2014, in Ioannina.
