I also included a list of 40 or so songs that I really liked. I tried to keep the singles list to one per artist, or I would have ended up listing 4-5 songs each from Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, The XX, Dirty Projectors, Miike Snow, etc.

I had a tough time picking album #10. There were so many choices of albums that I really liked but didn't love: Le Loup, Atlas Sound, Megafaun, Cymbals Eat Guitars, etc. What put Phoenix over the edge is the fact that I sort of want to buy a Cadillac SRX whenever I see the commercial featuring "1901."

Miike Snow has a lot of things going against them. For one, they are responsible for Britney Spears' "Toxic" [I did not know that, but now that I do I take back ten percent of the bad things I've said about them. "Toxic" is the best and Matt is an idiot. -ed] . Second, their live show isn't so good: the band members all wear masks for some reason and they only played for about 20 minutes before stomping off to their dressing room. Three, ladies in high heels dancing to "Cult Logic" and "Animal" at 2:30am got the cops called to my apartment and almost got me kicked out of my building (my downstairs neighbors are babies). But I love them anyway. Definitely my most danced-to album of 2009. Thanks for the heads up on this one, Cydney.

For some reason I have a thing for Malian music: Tinariwen, Oumou Sangaré, Amadou & Miriam, etc. I love that there were two Malian albums in our 2009 lists (sorry Dave, I looked at the list of albums before writing my album comments). "Iyo Djeli" is the best track.

I listened to "Drain the Blood" for about a week straight. Stupid band name (mostly because anything that starts with Rural makes me think of "The Rural Juror" from 30 Rock), but a very solid indie rock album.

Thank god the Wild Beasts' singer cut down on the ridiculous falsetto he used on Limbo Panto's "Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants." [That song, its video, and its falsetto are awesome. -Ed] Standout tracks are "This is Our Lot," "The Empty Nest," and "All the King's Men."

Two words: "My Girls."

Not much to say other than that Bitte Orca was a great album. "Stillness Is the Move" is the obvious standout track, but "Temecula Sunrise" and "No Intention" are very good in their own right.

One of the best debut albums I've heard in some time. The male and female vocals complement each other perfectly. "Shelter," "Crystalised," "Islands," and "Heart Skipped a Beat" are all excellent songs.

2009's version of Sufjan Stevens' Illinois. I love it. Standout tracks are "Tenuousness," "Anonanimal," and "Not a Robot, But a Ghost."

Honestly, I could have made a case for any of my top 5 to be album of the year. But, at the end of the day, Veckatimest gets the win on the strength of "Two Weeks" and" While You Wait for the Others." The rest of the album is pretty great too.
