The opening of the Jewish monument in Lukow, June 19, 2015

The opening ceremony for the memorial stone commemorating the Jewish Community of Lukow took place in Lukow on June 19, 2015. The almost entire Jewish population of Lukow which had accounted for 6000 residents, or from one-half to two thirds of the city population was exterminated during the Holocaust The stone was erected on the corner of Miedzyrzecka/Boznicza street where the synagogue had stood before the war and was blown up during the German occupation of Poland. The erection of this monument dedicated to the Jews that are no more in Lukow, was initiated and realized, throush sponsorship of Poland's Jewish Community Foundation by Prof. Krzysztof Czubaszek, a native of Lukow and historian of the Lukow Jewry. He is the author of "Zydzi Lukowa i okolic" (The Jews of Lukow and its vicinities), a fundamental research into the history of the Lukow Jews. Apart from Dr. Czubaszek, the ceremony was attended by the city authorities, representatives of Poland's Jewish community, the chief rabbi of Poland, journalists and guests from Israel, France, Denmark and Russia, whose ancestors had lived in Lukow before the Second World War. The war ended 70 years ago but the wounds are still bleeding...
