Building Trades

Building Trades is a class for any high school junior or senior. It is a year-long course that meets for two periods each day, either in the morning or the afternoon, Students will do the framing, roofing, install doors & windows, experience drywall, install finish trim, plus much more!

Iowa BIG

Iowa BIG is a project-based learning program for sophomore, junior, and senior students within the Cedar Rapids, Linn-Mar, and College Community School District. BIG is designed to help students lead their own learning journey and discover gifts, talents, and interests.

Career Academies

Explore future careers with the hands-on learning available through Kirkwood courses. Academies are made up of liberal arts and career / technical courses that can be transferred to other colleges and universities.

College Courses

Students who have exhausted the curriculum at Washington can apply to take college courses at Coe College, Mt. Mercy University, or Kirkwood Community College. Please visit with your counselor if you are interested in this opportunity!

Current Juniors & Seniors ONLY!

Through a collaboration with Habitat for Humanity, the Greater Cedar Rapids Housing & Building Association, and Workplace Learning Connection, the Cedar Rapids Community School District begins its second year participating in the Students Build Community internship. During the course of the 2023-2024 school year, students will build a home for a local family while  learning from industry experts, gaining construction-related skills, and giving back. The construction-related skills include all aspects of building, project management, interior design, and landscaping. 


Students earn elective credits, complete OSHA10 training, and will build a network of references for future opportunities. 


The internship meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM, following all CRCSD breaks, delays, etc. Transportation will be provided through CRCSD district vans with all tools and equipment provided by Habitat for Humanity. The first class will meet on Thursday, August 24.
