Alumni Experiences

"FCVC-SURF gave me the invaluable opportunity to visualize a career in research by pairing me with a fantastic mentor, organizing conversations with current physician scientists, and allowing me to present my research for the first time. I can now move forward with confidence that a scientific career is the best option for my interests."

 Micaela Yudelman, FCVC SURF 2023

"This program has facilitated the opportunity for me to grow not only as a researcher and student but growth as an individual outside of academia. I came from a background where I had almost zero to none research experience and to see how much knowledge I've gained from such exposure is something I will take with me in every environment I enter."

Cindy Avila, FCVC SURF 2023

"The FCVC program reinforced my desire to pursue research in conjunction with my future career in medicine. Having the opportunity to learn useful lab techniques and gain invaluable exposure to cardiovascular research makes me incredibly grateful for the program, and I will continue to utilize these skills in future endeavors."

Andrew Jung, FCVC SURF 2023

Mentor Experiences

“The FCVC SURF program offers a wonderful opportunity for undergraduates to have a summer research experience at the University of Michigan. In addition to learning some technical skills, the experience can help students assess whether this is something they want to pursue in their future careers.  My lab was delighted to participate in this program this Summer and felt very lucky to be matched with Micaela Yudelman, who quickly integrated into the lab and made valuable contributions to a project looking at a specific noncoding RNA that may be a therapeutic target in heart failure.”

Anthony Rosenzweig, Ph.D.

"In my own personal experience as a student, postdoctoral fellow, and now as an early-career faculty member, I have had amazing mentors who sat with me and discussed not just research ideas but also my career trajectory. They also showed me that a mentor’s responsibilities go beyond that of a supervisor. The students who come in through the FCVC SURF program to spend two months in the lab are highly motivated, willing to learn and driven - it is a pleasure to work with them and mentor them. They are also at a crucial stage in their life as they are at the verge of starting their actual careers. In our lab, we not only discuss just their summer projects and the necessary techniques, but also spend some time listening to their future aspirations and advise them as needed."

Juilee Rege, Ph.D.

"The research experiences that inspired my career as a physician-scientist began through a program very much like FCVC SURF. So it has been especially exciting for me to come “full circle” and have the opportunity to train the next generation of aspiring scientists."

Jordan Shavit, M.D., Ph.D.

Alumni Spotlight: Grace Holton, 2021

Hi! My name is Grace Holton, and I was a 2021 FCVC SURF student. I worked in Dr. Daniel Goldstein's lab on a protein named suPAR. This was a protein that was commonly studied in CKD, and we wanted to see if it was linked to CVD as well. This led perfectly into my research this summer. I am now at Stanford University in the urology department doing translational research in kidney stones and bladder cancer. My project works on a more efficient mechanism of removing kidney stones through a hydrogel and magnetic wire. I plan on applying to medical school this upcoming cycle. I am so thankful for the FCVC SURF program for introducing me to academic research and allowing me to further my research and career goals.
