Teaching

I regularly give workshops, guest lectures, and tutorials. This page contains an overview of my teaching experience and links to materials. The order does not indicate relevance or any preference, so ask me about any of these (and other) topics!

First Language Acquisition

How do babies acquire this complex, uniquely human capacity of communication through highly abstract means? This is my key research question, and I really enjoy discussing it with students.

Guest lectures

Topic: Word learning. In the master course DGCN18 – ‘Language Acquisition’ 2018-2019 (2 years), Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands. Instructor: Paula Fikkert.

Topics: Input, Infant-directed speech, word learning. In the master course LC1 - ‘Language Acquisition and processing’ 2016-2017 (1 year), Ecole Normale Supérieure Paris, France. Instructor: Alejandrina Cristia.

Meta-Analyses

As scientist, I am searching for some form of "the truth" and meta-analyses are one way to get closer. Within the MetaLab project, we developed extensive teaching materials which I now regularly use. Sho Tsuji and I also received a BITSS Catalyst grant to teach how meta-analyses and open science can improve reproducibility.

Guest lectures

Topic: Current trends in methodology: Many babies, many labs, new statistics . In the master course DGCN18 – ‘Language Acquisition’ 2018-2019, Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands. Instructor: Paula Fikkert.

Computational Modelling

A key tool in my research is computational modelling. In my dissertation I exclusively relied on computational tools to study early word learning, because models are way easier to test and more transparent than babies.

"Computational Models in Language Acquisition Research." Recurring tutorial at Experimental Methods in Language Acquisition Research (EMLAR), Utrecht, The Netherlands The Netherlands Website with slides, reference script, and further resources

Open Science

Transparent, reproducible, and accessible should in my opinion be standard features of science. Until that is the case, I will discuss ways to improve our practices. Note: Aspects of open science are part of other courses as well, like discussing code sharing via github etc during modelling tutorials.

Science Communication, Outreach, Social Media for Academics

A specific case of open science is increasing transparency and accessibility through science communication. I particularly focus on social media (blogs, twitter) due to my personal experience with this form of science communication. Many of the topics covered in these classes (e.g. how to avoid jargon) also apply to in-person science communication.

“How to use social media effectively and ways to engage in public outreach.” DECLife Academic Skills Workshop, 6. Dec. 2017, Paris, France
