What is PAGE?
PAGE (Partners for the Advancement of Gifted Education) is a working committee of parent volunteers and educators of gifted students in Southeast Wisconsin, composed of representatives from member school districts. By combining resources from our individual school districts, we collaborate to provide educational and enrichment opportunities for gifted students and their families.
What does PAGE do?
The mission of PAGE is to provide information, collaboration, and networking to help meet the needs of gifted children at home and in school. Over the years, PAGE has sponsored a wide variety of activities to enhance the academic, intellectual, creative, visual arts, performing arts, and leadership talents of gifted students. Past events and projects have included author visits, guest speakers for parents and educators, activity nights for families, an annual opportunity fair, and donations of gifted education books to our county library systems. In addition, PAGE has supported the social and emotional needs of gifted children, and has helped parents and teachers understand and respond to those needs.
Who are the members of PAGE?
The Cooperative Educational Service Agency (CESA) #1 is located in southeastern Wisconsin and includes 45 public school districts in six counties. Membership in PAGE is open to any of these school districts. Our member districts include: Cedarburg, Elmbrook, Franklin, Germantown, Grafton, Greendale, Kettle Moraine, Milwaukee, Muskego-Norway, New Berlin, Oconomowoc, Racine Unified, South Milwaukee, Waukesha, Wauwatosa, West Allis-West Milwaukee, and Whitnall. Any district within CESA #1 is eligible to become a member of PAGE. We welcome new member districts. What do the educator and parent representatives of PAGE do?
Representatives are expected to attend four or five meetings/year. These meetings are held on Friday afternoons, 12:30 – 2:30 pm. In addition to planning PAGE sponsored events during these meetings, we share information about educational topics and special events. We also ask each representative to volunteer at PAGE sponsored events throughout the year, take the lead on coordinating a PAGE sponsored event, or consider holding one of our key leadership roles.
When was PAGE established?
PAGE was formed in the late 1980’s as an alliance between educators and parents who sought to provide ongoing educational services for gifted students, and to provide support and networking for their parents. It was their hope that by working together and pooling resources, they could provide valuable programming to a wide audience.
How are PAGE events advertised?
Flyers for PAGE sponsored events are distributed electronically to each member school district to be shared with parents and students in their district. Due to limited space, some events may be targeted to specific audiences – for example, a Writing Activity Night, might be offered primarily to students who have shown a love for and interest in Writing.
Do PAGE programs cost anything to those who attend?
We have always offered all of our programming free to educators, parents and students. We rely heavily on volunteers to plan and coordinate our events, school districts to provide free space to hold events, and the annual dues of our member districts to cover any financial costs.
My district is not a member of PAGE – how can we join?
Any school district within CESA #1 is welcome to join PAGE by agreeing to pay annual dues ($175 in 19/20) and regularly sending one educator representative and one parent representative to each meeting. Member districts receive electronic flyers advertising all PAGE events, including information on how to register for such events. Many districts are attracted to the fact that membership in PAGE helps satisfy the “parent participation” aspect of “Standard (t)”, the Wisconsin statute that requires school districts to provide appropriate programming for gifted and talented students in Wisconsin public schools. What if my kids attend a non-member district, a private or parochial school, or are home-schooled?
All are welcome to attend our annual Opportunity Fair, but for our other events, the number of participants is often limited. Because we are able to make our events available using resources from our member districts, the events are typically available only to students, parents, and educators affiliated with our member districts.
