06-ALATHUR BROTHERS

Alathur Brothers at the Music Academy, Madras, 23.12.1964 [Sangita Kalanidhi Concert]

Nādabhṛṅga is very happy to bring to you an historic concert recording of the Alathur Brothers (Mahavidwans Sri Sivasubramania Iyer and Sri Srinivasa Iyer), performed on the evening of 23rd December, 1964, at the Music Academy, Madras. Sri Alathur Sivasubramania Iyer was the Sangeetha Kalanidhi elect and President of the conference that year. Unfortunately due to his failing health, this also turned out to be his last concert at the Music Academy. The brothers were in resplendent form in this concert, right from the opening Varna. The spectacular accompaniment by Vidwan Sri Lalgudi G Jayaraman (violin) and Mahavidwan Sri Palghat T S Mani Iyer (mridangam) make this a most memorable concert. Sri Jayaraman shines through, both during his solos as well as while supporting the brothers. Sri Mani Iyer's accompaniment for each song is spectacular! The thani avarthanam is something worth savouring for ages to come. We spent 4 days meticulously cleaning and remastering this concert as our humble offering to these great musical titans. We apologise for any shortcomings in the original tape which we could not correct. The programme details are as follows:
