Science for People Group

Science for People (SfP) was the bi-monthly and latterly quarterly magazine of the British Society for Social Responsibility in Science (BSSRS). It succeeded the BSSRS Newssheet in the Autumn of 1972 incorporating more discussional material. The Newssheet had run for 17 issues. Thus, the first issue of SfP was numbered 18 and more than 50 issues were produced during the remainder of the 1970s and throughout the whole of the 1980s. The last issue, issue 70, appeared in the Autumn of 1989.

In keeping with BSSRS's aims, SfP was the magazine of the radical science movement, complimenting the more specialised coverage of journals such as Undercurrents and the more theoretical discussion to be found in the Radical Science Journal. It provided brief coverage of topical science matters from a radical standpoint as well as reporting on the work of BSSRS affiliated and associated groups. Issues of SfP were generally eclectic in terms of the issues covered though a number of more in depth specilaist issues were produced - on Women in Science (Issues 19 and 29), Agricapital (Issue 34), Health (Issues 38 and 62), Nuclear Power (Double Issue 40/41), Information Technology (Issue 53) and Star Wars (Issue 61). Issue 51, produced in Spring 1982 contained a 50-year retrospective on the radical science movement, Science at the Crossroads, based on papers presented to a special BSSRS Conference held in 1981.

SfP was produced by a collective with an evolving membership. Organisationally, the collective illustrated the general tension which preoccupied the libertarian left of the time between those that feared the Tyranny of Structure and those that feared the Tyranny of Structurelessness

In the US, there was a sister/brother magazine, called Science for the People...a name which has been adopted by another UK group in early 2000s

We are working on a way to present the SfPs in a format that you can access. And we are checking to see whether it is 'searchbable'..

Here are some SfPs, more on their way. You can download to search or use Google Viewer
