Father’s Day - Broadstone Players, Memorial Hall: REVIEW

Peter Watson sinks into a part and gathers it around him, like an invisible cloak morphing into his character.

He did it as lecturer Frank in Educating Rita, and against this week as irascible Henry, the father in Eric Chappell’s play - which is based on the TV sitcom Home to Roost starring the late John Thaw.

Henry is living on his own since his wife Sue (Janine Williams) left him, taking the three children.

Enter eldest son Matthew - Calum Williams in his first play since leaving school.

The newcomer to the players shows early promise as the less than honest teenager keen to re-establish contact with his father - but on his terms.

Henry’s disdain at what he at first sees as an unacceptable arrangement is heightened, when Matthew introduces his girl friend, who is sinking under the weight of tattoos and body piercings, not to mention the most extraordinary white make up.

Alyssa Thompson doesn’t say a word in the first half, but it is a case of actions speaking louder than words - and this she does to perfection. A talent to watch out for.

And when ex-wife Sue also arrives unexpectedly there are some splendidly funny altercations.

Directed by Estelle Hughes, the stage set works really well, and this play provides a good evening’s entertainment.

It runs until Saturday, including a matinee, Tickets from Broadstone News, by phoning 01202 678449 or email honsec@broadstoneplayers.co.uk
