Commercial/Industrial Applications (a few examples)
• Early medical diagnostic protocol in combination with mass spectrometry.
• Advanced controlled and targeted (localised) cell and/or molecular driven therapeutics (with and without medical/experimental genes) for e.g. in combination with gene therapy for addressing a wide range of diseases such as autoimmune based diseases (Type 1 diabetes etc).
• Tissue engineering and regenerative biology and medicine (reconstruction of blood vessels and other tissues to organs)
• Development of three-dimensional tailor-made cultures, e.g. for studying disease models (cancer etc…) at given disease states.
• Drug discovery and development (from a cellular, to tissue and organ level), a high thought-put screening methodology.
• Personalised medicine
The above have subset applications spanning and not limited to the following,
cell immobilisation by way of microencapsulation as beads and as fibres/scaffolds and membranes; tissue repair and replacement with the generation of tailor-made synthetic fully functional tissues and organs with the addition of a therapeutic payload for controlled and localised delivery; enhanced cellular cryopreservation to the reduction in rodent model based studies.
