HVEI 25th Anniversary Press Release 2013

Press Release, January 15, 2013

25th Anniversary of the IS&T/SPIE Conference on Human Vision and Electronic Imaging (HVEI), February 4-7, 2013, Hyatt San Francisco Airport Hotel, Burlingame, CA.

We are proud to announce the 25th Anniversary program for the Conference on Human Vision and Electronic Imaging (HVEI). HVEI is the premiere conference at the intersection between research in human perception, cognition and aesthetics and the evolution of technologies, from displays, to digital compression, to digital libraries, to data mining and visualization.

This year marks a turning point for bringing together electronic media and human perception. As electronic media take center stage in the world of commerce, entertainment, medicine, education, finance, and communication, there is increased recognition that the most important component to the future success of the underlying technologies and applications is the human, who creates, absorbs and interacts with this information. The Conference on Human Vision and Electronic Imaging is dedicated to providing the research and infrastructure to drive this important research direction.

This year’s keynote and banquet speakers frame a broad multidisciplinary scope, including Aude Oliva (MIT) on image memorability, Jan Koenderink (Delft) on visual awareness, Don Hoffman (UC Irvine) on whether natural selection favors veridical perception, and Walter Bender (Sugar Labs) on the role of perception research in building the one laptop per child initiative. The program also features a dozen theme talks that explore the evolution of key multidisciplinary trends developed at HVEI over the past 25 years, and project how these ideas will advance. The program also includes interactive discussions designed to build communication between scientists and technologists, to nourish the dialogue that will drive this future.

The Advance Program for the HVEI conference is available on the SPIE web site. More information about the Human Vision and Electronic Imaging community can be found on the HVEI web site

This year’s conference chairs are Bernice Rogowitz: bernice.e.rogowitz@gmail.com, Thrasos pappas: pappas@eecs.northwestern.edu, and Huib de Ridder: h.deridder@tudelft.nl

HVEI is sponsored by the IS&T Society for Imaging Science and Technology (www.imaging.org) and by the SPIE, the International Society for Optics and Photonics (www.spie.org).
