Edward George Hrivnak

Edward “Eddie” George Hrivnak escaped this mortal realm on Friday, February 5, 2021 at the age of 96 to go play basketball in the prestigious heaven League. Born in Lakewood, Ohio (Birdtown District) on June 27, 1924. He came into this world on June 27, 1924 and many swear that he was holding a basketball when he entered this world. It may have been an accordion – the witnesses to this event have long passed. Regardless, if they were still around you would hear stories of bouncing basketballs and music playing all over the Birdtown District of Lakewood, Ohio.

After graduating from Lakewood High School in 1942, Ed was recruited by Mt. Union College to play basketball on a partial scholarship where he was the first person to letter as a freshman. He supplemented the scholarship with a job and was grateful for the support from his father and brothers.

In college he enlisted in Naval Reserves, was assigned to the V-1 S unit and after nine months was on active duty assigned to the V-12 Unit at Baldwin Wallace College. The V-12 Navy College Training Program was designed to supplement the force of commissioned officers in the United States Navy during World War II. [Between July 1, 1943, and June 30, 1946, more than 125,000 participants were enrolled in 131 colleges and universities in the United States.] The Navy sent Ed from BW to Columbia University where he attended Midshipment school earning the rank of Ensign. He was 19 years old. In March of 1945, Ensign Hrivnak volunteered for extra-hazardous duty into a unit called UDT, Underwater Demolition Team. [Today the unit is known as the Navy SEALs]. Edward would end up serving in the China Burma India Theater (CBI Region) and the Island Hopping campaigns. Ed said “they drove over the Burma Road into Kunmig, China on missions protecting the air bases and few other things.”

After WWII Ed returned to Baldwin Wallace to earn a bachelors in science while playing basketball and running track. On 26 November 1947 the BW paper wrote this about Ed’s basketball skills. “Leading scorer on the team for the past season was Hrivnak, the tall but fast-moving star from Lakewood. Eddie has perfected a marvelous shot that will drive opponents wild this season. He takes off from about the foul line and somehow makes it to the basket in one lunge.” His senior year as a starter, he set several team records. His excellent set shot, combined with strong leaping ability and known for floating on a drive-on scoop shot may have set the stage for many of today’s fast break moves. He would be the high scorer at BWU (220 points), placed 3rd in the district during his senior year and was inducted into the BW Hall of Fame in 1980.

Following graduation from BW Edward worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron where he played basketball for the Goodyear Wingfoots, part of the National Industrial Basketball League (NIBL), as a center in 1948. Ed earned the team high scorer and made the all-league team.

In 1949 Ed became a teacher and coach. Ed was at Newton Falls High School for six years where the basketball team posted a 65-25 record then he took the helm at Wickliffe High School for one year. It was during this time that Ed earned a Master of Education using his GI bill.

Ed next arrived at the Roehm Junior High, a new school in the Berea School System, where he taught and coached until he retired. He also earned his Doctorate in Education while teaching at Roehm. Over the years, Edward had a thing for remembering his many friends and students, especially the people who played sports.

While teaching at Roehm a friend asked Ed to join a co-ed organization. He played softball and joined a band playing his accordion or piano at parties and after games. At an event, Ed saw an “attractive girl across the room”, asked her to dance and they were married nine months later in December of 1960. Ed and Gail were active members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Berea where they raised two children.

Ed will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know him. Preceded in death by his parents Andrew and Mary (nee Scerba) Hrivnak, siblings John, Andrew and Ann. Survived by his wife of 60 years, Gail Mary (nee Boyd) Hrivnak. Father of Mary Kaye Hrivnak; Helen Christian, son-in-law Ed, and granddaughter Lauren.

JAMES ROBERT PAE

August 11, 1932 ~ June 4, 2020 (age 87)

JAMES ROBERT PAE age 87. Beloved husband of Janice (nee Bailey). Loving father of Jennifer E. Klingbeil (Mark) and James F. Pae (Denise). Devoted grandfather of Bailey Klingbeil, James, Christopher and Karen Steinbauer. Dear brother of the late Joseph and Thomas. U.S. Army Veteran.

Above all, James embraced and valued people. He saw the good and their potential and was able to inspire them to greater things. His life was spent bringing people together and bringing joy to occasions big and small. He was sociable, engaging, and charming. A truly dedicated family man, he was intent to make certain those he most loved were well taken care of, supported, and happy.

For 35 years, he taught in the Berea City School district sharing his passion for American literature and his legacy is often felt when former students ardently share their appreciation, respect, and fond memories of their high school days with him.

As lifelong learner, James spent afternoons at the Cleveland Orchestra better appreciating classical music, reading volumes on jazz and jazz artists and, until only recently, attending classes at Baldwin Wallace. The more he learned, the more he was eager to share with those he loved, inspiring the next generation to appreciate those same things he did.

His interest in sports began early as a high school varsity athlete in football, basketball, and track. For years, he was season ticket holder of the Browns, made annual trips to the early rounds of NCAA basketball tournament and was an avid golfer. Throughout his life, he was a constant spectator of his children’s and grandchildren’s basketball games, volleyball and tennis matches, and swim meets.

James embraced life wholly, just as he embraced his family. In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested to either of the following:

Carole Lee Lewis

(nee Bittner), age 76, born 10/29/1942, It is with great sorrow we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Mother and Nana on February 12, 2019. Carole was born in Rockaway Beach, NY and came to Berea in 1960 to attend Baldwin Wallace, where she received her teaching and Masters degree and met the love of her life, Mike Lewis. Carole is preceded by her husband and survived by her sons, Michael (Carolyn), David (Julie), and her adored 6 grandchildren; Maddie, Tommy, Michelle, Joe, Callaghan, and Michael. Carole taught for over 30 years in the Berea City Schools and then in retirement, enjoyed traveling the world, time at the lake, and the theatre. She will be deeply missed. A celebration of life will be planned for a future date.

Coach Sandy Wilson

Sandy Nelson Wilson passed away peacefully on September 20, 2018 in Port Orchard, Washington. Born December 18, 1930 in Birmingham, Alabama and raised in Canton, Ohio.

Sandy is survived by his wife of 61 years Valera Wilson and 3 children Gregg (Amy), Jeff, Marc (Joni), grandchildren JJ, Mitchell, Amy Jo, Maggie and Brian, great grandchildren Alexis, JR, Brayden, Isabelle, Grayson and Quinn. Brother-in-laws James (India) Manwaring, James Jokie and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents Claude Wilson, Ruth (Reginald) Parr, Aunt Nell Jones, Aunt Pat (Fred) Ozenne, Father-in-law Commander Frank Screws (Ret. Navy), Mother-in-law Edna Screws, Brother-in-law Trojan Screws and Sister-in-law Judi Joki.

Sandy attended Canton McKinley High School where he excelled on the swimming team from 1945-48. Encouraged by his good friend Alex Steve, Sandy attended Ohio University and continued to excel in swimming from 1949-52. After graduating from Ohio University, he went on to Bowling Green State University where he received his Master’s of Science and Education degree in 1954.

Sandy proudly served in the United States Navy from 1955-57 and was stationed at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii. This is where he met and fell deeply in love with Valera Screws and they were married July 13, 1957 at the Navy Chapel. They moved to Toledo, Ohio where their 3 sons, Gregg, Jeff and Marc, were born. During those years he coached age group swimming at the Toledo Club and taught Junior High School Science. He also served as Ohio AAU swimming chairman from 1958-61. The family moved to Berea, Ohio when Sandy took the head swimming coach position at Berea High School, guiding the swimming program for 4 successful years.

Sandy was hired at Ashland (College) University as the first head swimming coach and Aquatic Director for its inaugural swimming program in 1967. This was the beginning for his 30 year college teaching and coaching career. During this time he turned out a phenomenal 30 different All Americans and 3 different National Champions. The Ashland Eagles also dominated the Penn-Ohio Championships during most of those years. Professor Wilson taught a variety of classes at Ashland such as, Science, Kinesiology, Racquetball, and Golf.

Coach Wilson was recognized and inducted into multiple Hall of Fames including Berea High School, Canton Aquatics Association, and Ashland University. In addition, he was very involved with the National YMCA swimming program including being the Honorary Head Starter for the National Swimming Finals for several years. As the founding father of the Ashland University's swimming program and swimming coach, Sandy was honored on campus May 14, 2012 with a luncheon and dedication of the "Sandy Wilson Locker Room" located inside the Recreation Center. Quote from luncheon: "I wish that all the young people can have the opportunities I had, to have such a good experience that you can't wait to get up to go to work. There's never been a day in my life that I didn't want to get up and go to work".

Sandy loved the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the young men and women through his teaching and coaching but his true love was spending time with Val and the kids. Summer vacations were filled with travel, like the many cross country camping trips from Ohio to the Pacific Northwest as well as fresh water fishing vacations to Wisconsin. Weekend getaways to Mohican State Park and Cedar Point amusement park were always on the agenda. The family spent many Christmas vacations and spring breaks on the beaches in Florida. He enjoyed coaching his sons in swimming and Little League baseball as well, and as a teacher, he took a keen interest in their education. He was proud of the career decisions they made, including their Navy service.

But what delighted Sandy the most was spending time with the crown jewel of his life ~ Val. Whether it was dancing to country music, eating out with friends, or taking part in one of the many facility functions at the university, he loved spending time with his bride. He loved her more than anything and this was clear to anyone who spent time with them.

Following retirement from Ashland University with Emeritus Faculty status, Sandy and Val moved to Oak Harbor Washington where they lived until just prior to his passing.

A visitation for Sandy will be held on October 1st from 3-5pm. Memorial Services will be held October 2nd, 1pm with reception to follow. All services will be held at Wallin Funeral Home 1811 NE 16th Ave Oak Harbor.

HARL LUTHER "ROCKY" EVANS, age 74, passed away from a heart attack on Feb. 4, 2016 while vacationing in Venice, FL. He leaves behind his wife, Barbara (Pratt); loving father of Julie Morris (Craig) and Amy Thornburg (Jeremy); devoted grandfather of Connor and Shannon Morris. Brother to Garry (Karen); uncle to Brent and Brock. Preceded in death by his parents Martin L. Jr and Georgianna (Sharp) of Marion, OH. After graduating from Harding High School, Harl attended Ohio University graduating with a MAED.

He taught and coached at Medina and Berea High School. Upon retiring, Harl built new clubs for Kiwanis International. Most of all, he enjoyed attending his granchildren's events.

Obituary

GEORGE CHARLES SCHNEIDER, age 93. of Strongsville, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2015. Devoted husband of the late Delphine for 66 years, beloved father of Susan L. Minor (Joseph), proud grandfather of Mallory and Julie Minor. Known as a gentleman and a scholar, Mr. Schneider was inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame for both Olmsted Falls and Berea City Schools as a Distinguished Staff member for major contributions to those school systems. He began his career in 1947 at Olmsted Falls, teaching there for 12 years. In 1956, he was elected president of the Cuyahoga County Education Association. Mr. Schneider began teaching at Berea High School in 1959 and within three years he was named chairman of the History department. In 1963, he was awarded the prestigious John Hay Fellowship, which granted him a one year sabbatical for further studies at Northwestern University. He was one of only three high school teachers in Ohio to receive the honor for that school year. Three years later, Mr. Schneider was named a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar for his excellence in teaching. During his 30 years in education, he helped train 19 student teachers from Baldwin-Wallace College and Bowling Green University and retired from teaching in 1977. A highly respected educator, former students from the classes of 1950 through 1977 had kept in contact with him through the years. A 1943 graduate of Hiram College, George retained a sense of loyalty to his school and served on the Alumni Executive Board for four years and helped to plan their 50th class reunion in 1993. He also earned a Master's Degree in History from (Case) Western Reserve University. During World War II, he served with the 98th Infantry division in the Pacific, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was in the army of occupation in Japan when the war ended. In recent years, George and Delphine attended many army reunions in various states; throughout his life he was a patriotic veteran who loved his country. Another great love of Mr. Schneider's was his Masonic affiliation. He was a 57 year member of Quarry Lodge #382 (Berea), former marshal of Triangle Council #139, a Knight Templar, a 32 degree Mason, and a Shriner. He wrote the history of Berea Lodge, covering 1942-1967. As a member of Heritage Congregational Church, he served as a deacon in the 1980's. A man of many interests, he enjoyed gardening, bird-watching, photography, woodworking, traveling, storytelling, genealogy, and was a collector - a passion he shared with his son-in-law, Joe. George was a devoted family man, who was most proud of raising his daughter, Susan, with Delphine and cherished his granddaughters, Mallory and Julie. His family, friends, neighbors, and students will miss him greatly. As a man of character, Georgelived his life with integrity, honesty, loyalty and always loved to say: "That reminds me of a story..." ROBERT "BOB" V. DOMENCETTI, 77, of Salem, Ohio died of natural causes at home, the morning of Saturday, December 27, 2014. Bob moved to Columbia Station in 1960 where he was band director at Olmsted Falls High School and then Berea High School for 14 years. His bands consistently received the state's highest ratings at both District and State Competitions, were honored as the "Ohio Band of the Year" and were invited to tour Mexico. Obituary

Herbert Thomas "Tom" Somerville, 84, of Hendersonville, NC died Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at the Life Care Center. Tom was born on January 3, 1930 in Smithfield, Ohio to the late Joseph Oakley and Marjorie Huff Somerville.

Tom went to Ohio University where he received his Bachelor degree in education. During his senior year of college, he met the love of his life, Helen Partridge, who was also planning a career in education. They married on September 23, 1951 in Dover, Ohio. Tom was soon drafted into the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Serving as a Sergeant First Class during strategic ground operations, he was awarded The Bronze Star Metal in Artillery. After returning home from Korea, he went on to receive his Master's degree at Ohio University and later, he earned his Doctorate degree at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio. Although his first job in education was an Industrial Arts teacher, he went on to become a very distinguished high school principal at Midpark High School in Middleburg Heights, Ohio. He and Helen enjoyed nurturing and helping the children of their community as if they were their own. They enjoyed traveling much of the United States in their motor home for more than 30 years; however, their favorite destination was Colorado. After retirement, they settled in Flat Rock in 1988 and continued traveling by going overseas. They were former members of the Hendersonville Memories dinner dance club, never missing a chance to Jitter-Bug. They were also part of the Golden Boys, a group that belonged to the Pebble Creek Country Club in Taylors, SC. He was an avid golfer as well as a bowler, and a lifetime member of the BPOE 1660 Elks Club of Hendersonville.

Tom is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Helen Partridge Somerville, and his step-mother, Ruth Somerville both of Hendersonville. He is also survived by his pet dog, Katie.

A Memorial Service will be private.

JOHN R. "Jack" HETER, , 85 of Strongsville, OH, resident and professor emeritus of Education at Baldwin-Wallace College and former high school principal in Berea and Rittman, Ohio, high schools died Tuesday, September 16, 2014. He was born in Bellevue, OH, on March 31, 1929, the only son of the late Hayes J. and Mildred B. Heter. He was married on June 12, 1955, in Loudonville, OH, to Janice M. Kaufman. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two nieces Dr. Kitty Consolo and her husband Barry Allman of Granville and Nancy Consolo, Habib El-Khoury and great nieces Layla and Yasmine El-Khoury of Wake Forest, NC.

He was preceded in death by his and his wife's parents and his only sister-in-law, Jeanne Kaufman Consolo.He was a graduate of Bellevue, OH, High School, and received a B.S. degree from Heidelberg College, an M.A. from Ohio University, and an Ed. D. from (Case) Western Reserve University. He did additional study at Bowling Green State University and Baldwin-Wallace College Dr. Heter's entire professional work experience was in education, including two years as assistant director of admissions at Heidelberg College (1951-1953); teacher of English, Journalism, and Mathematics,

Guidance counselor and Assistant Principal at Bellevue High School (1954-1959); Principal of Rittman High School (1959-1966); principal of Berea High School (1966-1969); and professor of education and chairman, Division of Education, at Baldwin-Wallace College (1969-1986).

Following retirement, he taught part-time at B-W in the graduate program in educational supervision and administration. Following retirement, the Heters spent winters in Ft. Myers, FL, and he became involved in volunteer work in Cleveland, first with the Travelers Aid program at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and later with the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Greater Cleveland at the Visitors' Information Center at Hopkins Airport (more recently the Airport Ambassador program). In Florida, he volunteered at the Edison-Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers. Dr. Heter was a member of the United Methodist Church of Berea and an affiliate member of Holy Trinity Presbyterian Church when in N. Ft. Myers. He was active in numerous professional organizations at both the secondary and college levels, maintaining his life memberships in Phi Delta Kappa, NEA, and OEA. At various times, he was also a member of Kiwanis and Rotary and numerous community groups.

Dr. Heter was proud of his "family," the thousands of young people he worked with at both high school and college levels. He felt his post-retirement volunteer work continued in the same tradition. His participation with young people was greatly helped by the strong support and assistance of his wife (most without any public recognition) and the assistance of co-workers at all levels. WILLIAM E. "BILL' GARMAN, age 84, passed away Wednesday, September 11 at the Joshua Tree Senior Living Campus in North Olmsted, Ohio. He was a resident of Berea, Ohio for 50 years. Bill was an English teacher at Berea High School for 23 years. William received his Bachelor's Degree in Education from University of Akron in 1950 and his Master's Degree in English from Kent State in 1969. Also, taught in the Cleveland Public Schools and Greenwich School District. Teaching assignments during his career also included, Spanish, speech, journalism and dramatics.
