SCHOOL COUNSELING

Sheena Greenstone, MEd

Meet the School Counselor

My name is Sheena Greenstone. I am Zuni Edgewater born for the Bitterwater Clan. My maternal grandfather is of the Red Running into the Water clan and my paternal grandfather is of the Salt clan. This is how I introduce myself as a Navajo woman. I am born and raised in Shonto. I am the middle child as I have an older brother and sister, a younger sister, and 2 younger brothers. I have been married for 10 years and my husband, Phillip, is also in the education field.

After high school, I attended UNLV for my undergraduate where I obtained a dual bachelor’s in psychology and criminal justice. I returned home to the Navajo reservation and started working the local elementary school in the residential department where I assisted the director. Then I moved into a superintendent assistant position for a few more years before returning to school at NAU. I enrolled in the school counseling master’s program which I graduated from in May 2019. I am a first-generation college student and currently enrolled in the PhD combined school/counseling psychology program.

I enjoy watching movies, eating popcorn, and spending time with my family during the weekends. I like reading mysteries, thrillers, and suspense novels during my free time. I like peanut M&Ms and browsing Amazon to make wish lists.

I hold professional memberships with the American School Counselors Association (ASCA) and Arizona School Counselors Association (AzCSA). I look forward to working with the students, meeting parents, and contributing to Shonto Preparatory Schools.

Who are school counselors?

School counselors are highly educated, professionally certified individuals who help students succeed in school and plan their career. An integral part of the total education system, school counselors help students form healthy goals, mindsets and behaviors. With the aid of a school counselor, students learn to develop effective collaboration and cooperation skills, to practice perseverance, to develop time management and study skills, and to learn self-motivation and self-direction habits. For further reading and information, the following links provide The Role of the School Counselor and The Essential Role of High School Counselors.

My role is to provide social/emotional lessons to all students, provide small group interventions as needed, and individualized support. I am here for all students and their families.
