Week 02

Ideation

Tell us about your assignment's idea for this week. Why do you care about this idea? What inspired you? (Please include images or links to sources of inspiration)

inspiration

Double sided mobile holder, could be used for holding a mobile vertically or horizontally

Tool Chain

Which software/machines/materials did you use in the assignment? Why?

Machines

Laser Cutter: Malky ML1930

Materials

Softwares

Sketchup

for design thinking at the beginning

Fusion 360

sketching, modeling and parts assembly for laser cutting

RdWorks v8

software compatible with laser cutter machine

AutoCAD

i used it as a result of an on spot action as i am familiar with and faster.

Design/Preparation Process

Explain the design and/or preparation process of your assignment. How did you use the tool or software to design and/or prepare your assignment before fabrication/implementation?

design PREPARATION PROCESS

1- Design Thinking:

  • Searching for my mobile phone dims. (H:146.7 mm, W:71.5 mm D:7.65 mm).

  • Modeling the holder using sketchup

2- Sketching views on Fusion:

  • Sketching views based on the sketchup model dims from (create sketch then draw lines with dimensions)

  • Adjusting sketches to be fully defined.

3-Extruding

  • Turning sketches into bodies by extruding them with value 3mm (the thickness of plywood used for fabrication) from modify > Extrude.

3-Assemble

  • Joining parts using joints from (assemble, joint, assemble parts together)

3-Exporting dxf files

  • Right click on sketches, save as DXF

  • Repeate for each sketch

  • Sketches should be on x, y axis, if not, it apears as line after exporting as shown:

4-Importing dxf files to RDWorks and exporting rd extension ready for laser cutting

  • Open RDworks software.

  • Import sketches

  • Adjust speed and power

  • export .rd file for printing.

On spot Action: I had an idea while waiting my turn on lab to try paint spray on the assignmemt, and i wanted to try how the ingraved parts effect would be with the paint and i had no time to resketch on fusion, so i made offsets on AutoCad and changed its speed and power on RDWorks to try the effect

Development/Implementation Process

Explain the development/implementation process of your assignment. How did you use the machine/tool to manufacture or implement the design of your assignment?

  1. Start the machine.

  2. Makes sure the chiller is open.

  3. Copied .rd file from computer to the laser cutter using a flash memory.

  4. Insert plywood sheet in the machine.

  5. Close the door

  6. Adjust the origin and then try the framing to make sure the design fits the plywood.

  7. Start cutting.

Overcoming Challenges

What kinds of challenges or problems did you face while doing the assignment, tutorials, or exercises? How did you solve them? Did you ask for help from an instructor or peer? Please provide a link to the tutorial or article that you used to solve your problem (if any)

during design/preparation phase:

  1. I had a problem on thinking on fusion and imagine how parts could fit together and thinking about the way of doing what i think about on the software, so i began to model the mobile holder on sketchup with dims and then i drew its views on fusion and these steps took me much time and when i finished the views sketches on Fusion.

2. I had a problem on making the back part a fully defined shape, and after so many trials i fixed a point and made a dimensions sketch from it to the undefined lines and it worked. After using the program more and more i found that it could be solved if i took a dims sketch to the construction line at the center of the shape.

3. When I started to join parts i found that sides and base didn't fit together, so i re-sketched the following:

  • The Sides, as i designed the holder to be double sided and when i flipped the holder the two sides weren't on the same ground and adjusted where the back parts will be fitted.

  • The base, after joining the sides and front i edited the sketch to fit in.

while fabrication:

  1. Some unknown lines appeared while the laser cutter started scaning the first layer, so i did the following:

  • I stopped the machine and rechecked the file, but i didn't find the lines.

  • Then, i uploaded the file again after changing it's name, but for another unknown reason the design was mirrored.

  • I stopped the machine again and mirrored the design on RDworks and restart the machine and it worked.

Final result

How can you use the skills and knowledge that you've acquired this week in your final project?

WOW!

What is the coolest thing that you've learned this week? What is something that you will never forget from this week?

To be patient ! xD

I was about to change the idea to quit so many times all the assignment challenges, but i have learned intensively from keeping trying. Also, I tried to test new material, paint (stone effect) on wood and plastic. and didn't like its application on wood
