Week 1 - Journal

Ideation

Tell us about your assignment's idea for this week. Why do you care about this idea? What inspired you? (Please include images or links to sources of inspiration)

The assignment for this week is to browse an opensource CAD library and Prepare design files and fabricate models of my choice using 3D Printing and Laser Cutting.

Inspiration

Baymax

One of my favorite heroes from childhood, so now I hope to become friends also.

Iron man

I wished to be with us in our world, unfortunately this is not possible, but at least we can be together now.

Tool Chain

Which software/machines/materials did you use in the assignment? Why?

Material

Machines

Design/Preparation Process

Explain the design and/or preparation process of your assignment. How did you use the tool or software to design and/or prepare your assignment before fabrication/implementation?

Laser cutter for cup coaster

Steps to be ready for cutting :

  1. Download dxf file from here.

  2. Import the file from the laser cutter program.

  3. set Power value to 70 watts and 20 for speed.

  4. Remove any useless lines.

  5. Resize the model to be used as a cup coaster.

  6. save model as rld file.

3D Modeling for BAYMAX

Steps to be ready for printing :

  1. Download stl file from here.

  2. Check if it needs supports or not, the model doesn't need supports.

  3. check if it needs adhesion or not, the model doesn't need adhesion as it is already stable.

  4. resize it to be fit for printing and takes less than 90 minutes.

  5. set 0.2 layer Height and 0,20 infill.

  6. slice the model and save as gcode file.

  7. 3D model needs 1 hour, 10 minutes and 13 grams for printing.

Development/Implementation Process

Explain the development/implementation process of your assignment. How did you use the machine/tool to manufacture or implement the design of your assignment?

Laser Cutter

Steps to cut the model :

  1. Connect the machine with the laptop.

  2. Download the file from laser cad software.

  3. Name the file then push the start button.

  4. wait for the machine until finished.

  5. open the machine then you done it.

3D Printing

Steps to print the model :

  1. Copy file to sd card.

  2. set the printer on.

  3. preheat to be fit for PLA material.

  4. start printing and wait until finish.

Overcoming Challenges

What kinds of challenges or problems did you face while doing the assignment, tutorials, or exercises? How did you solve them? Did you ask for help from an instructor or peer? Please provide a link to the tutorial or article that you used to solve your problem (if any)

  • At first, I had a problem finding the right supports for the baymax model, but when I asked for advice from my instructor, he guided me that the model doesn't need supports and said that most of small models don't need a lot of support even the curves of their bodies.

Final Project

How can you use the skills and knowledge that you've acquired this week in your final project?

BAYMAX

Iron man

  • I learned how to browse 3D models.

  • How to design and print using a 3D printer.

  • How to add supports for 3D model.

  • How to cut wood using laser cutter software.

WOW!

What is the coolest thing that you've learned this week? What is something that you will never forget from this week?

Super Mario

Our little dinosaur

Weekly Digest [OPTIONAL]

Tell us about any other cool things that you've made this week: in the Hands-on activity, tutorial examples, exercises, or any other cool mini-project that you tried out aside from the assignment.

Hands-on activity

I made this mobile holder in hands-on activity using cartoons only.

The wonderful thing is that it is really fixed and can withstand heavy objects.
