Week #3 - Journal

Ideation

Tell us about your assignment's idea for this week. Why do you care about this idea? What inspired you? (Please include images or links to sources of inspiration)

This weeks' assignment is to design a model of a pen and pencil holder, that rest on a flat surface. My first thought was making a pen holder shaped like a bullet. Sleak and easy, but boring, Then the idea of a rook shaped pencil holder came up, which is more challenging, has more details and overall more fun to do.

Tool Chain

Which software/machines/materials did you use in the assignment? Why?

I used Fusion 360 to design this model. This model will be 3D printed on a prusa Mk2 printer using PLA filament material.

Design/Preparation Process

Explain the design and/or preparation process of your assignment. How did you use the tool or software to design and/or prepare your assignment before fabrication/implementation?

First i researched a few shapes and styles for rooks. I chose a certain design and decided to start on the base. Sketching the profile and using the revolve function makes it easy. The rest was a bit trickier. I wanted to project a brick pattern on the main body of the model. after consulting with an instructor during an open time support session and watching a youtube video, i started designing it using rectangular and circular patterns and rotating for the brick pattern body and extruding and cutting with the main body that revealed this interesting pattern.

Development/Implementation Process

Explain the development/implementation process of your assignment. How did you use the machine/tool to manufacture or implement the design of your assignment?

Upon finalizing the last details of the design, i saved it as an .stl file, which i opened in Ultimaker Cura software to set up the 3D printing parameters and generate a Gcode for the printer. It weighs 11grams and takes 1hour and 12 minutes for printing.

I set up the printing parameter for 20% infill, with brim support and layer height 0.2mm. I had to scale down the model to third its original size to fit the time and filament weight limit of the assignment.

After all the sketching and slicing was done, i could finally 3D print the model. Here are a few shots for the finished piece. I'm satisfied with the final result.

Overcoming Challenges

What kinds of challenges or problems did you face while doing the assignment, tutorials, or exercises? How did you solve them? Did you ask for help from an instructor or peer? Please provide a link to the tutorial or article that you used to solve your problem (if any)

The most challenging part of this assignment was definitely the brick pattern on the main body of the rook. But it was simplified through a YouTube video using multiple features in Fusion 360 like rectangular patterns, extrude cut, chamfer etc...
