FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions of 6th grade students and parents

Q: Where can I find homework posted?

A: You can find all homework and other assignments posted on each teacher's Google Classroom Page. Some teachers may also have it linked to the calendar on their websites. Additionally, I post a digital weekly homework calendar on my Google Classroom page with nightly homework and upcoming quiz/test dates.

Q: How much homework should I expect in 6th grade?

A: Math homework is typically given every night Monday-Thursday. ELA is given occasionally, with the addition to nightly independent reading. Science HW is given from time to time, but not usually more than 2 times per week, including writing Lab reports as part of HW. SS homework is given occasionally. You will also have to work on long term projects at home from time to time.

Q: Where can I check my grades?

A: You can check your grades using the SchoolBrains website. Each student and parent/guardian are given individual usernames and passwords at the beginning of the year. If you did not receive one or need assistance, contact the main office or guidance department.

Q: What Specials do I have and when will I have them?

A: Students in 6th grade will take the following specials: Art, Music, Physical Education(Gym), Tech. Ed., and STEM Lab. Each trimester students will take 2 specials rotations-the first one for the first half, and the second for the remainder of the trimester. There are 3 trimesters in the school year, so a total of 6 specials rotations. Students will receive a letter grade for specials on their report card. Students are placed into groupings for Specials and will stay with the same group throughout the year.

Q: Will I have a locker in 6th grade?

A: Yes, each student is assigned a locker in the 6th grade hallway near the unit and the locks are built into the locker. Students will be assigned a locker and given their locker combination on the first day of school. Don't stress! We will practice for the first few weeks and we are here to help you!

Q: Can I get extra help if I need it?

A: Yes, the best way to get extra help is to schedule time to meet with a teacher during ICE. Before/After school extra help is available as needed as well. I am available for extra help every other Monday and will post reminders in my Google Classroom page, or can be available other days per request as well.

Q: What is ICE?

A: ICE stands for Intervention, Correction, Enrichment. Each student has ICE for 1 period each day. ICE is a time where students participate in silent reading, complete homework, make-up work, finish tests/quizzes, or receive extra help from a teacher. At times, teachers may be providing enrichment activities as well. If you participate in band or chorus, this would take place during your regular ICE block. Some students will also participate in a Reading Intervention class during this time, small group Academic Support, or other specialized services.

Q: Can I sit with my friends at lunch?

A: All of the 6th graders from both units have lunch at the same time. At the beginning of the year, you will start off by sitting at a table with kids from your homeroom. After a few weeks, Mr. Goldstein (VP) will usually allow students to sit where they want.
