Students were challenged with creating a contraption that protects an egg from breaking. We took our creations to the playground and dropped them from the highest slide, and none of the eggs broke! the students did a great job using materials to protect their eggs from breaking.

Weigh in  Day
          Agriculture

Our farmyard steers got weighed this week. Before they were weighed, each student guesstimated their weights. Students observed the steers and made a first guess just by looking at them, then we calculate how much they might weight by how much food they ate. The class is enjoying following Clifford and Diesel and the students were surprised with how much weight the steers gained.

Christmas Tree Ornaments
Environment

Together with the grade 6 class, the grade 4's headed outside to collect items from nature  to make Christmas Tree ornaments. Students used twigs, spruce tree pieces, pinecones and string to craft beautiful tree ornaments. It was a great lesson for students how we can use items from the world around us to make something instead of buying it.

December 5 -8th

Skip Counting in the Barnyard
                Agriculture

We took our math practice to the barnyard where we practiced skip counting with our animals. We counted chicken wings,  sheep legs, animal tails, duck feet, fences and anything else we could think of. Students were then challenged with creating multiplication equations with this information.

             Gravity
                        Agriculture

In science we have started a new  unit, Non-Contact Forces.  We have been busy learning about the forces of gravity.  Students experimented with dropping various items from different hights and timing how long it took each of them to drop.

Christmas Art
  Environment

We joined the grade 5 class in creating a fun Christmas art project. Students had their first opportunity to use a dichotomous key in art on Friday! They were able to head outside into nature and find fallen tree branches to use as a model for their holiday art project. We headed inside and discussed how to use a dichotomous key to determine what type of tree branch they found before spending the rest of the time enjoying Christmas carols and exploring our creative side by using our natural model to create a Christmas art project!

November 27 - December 1

Egg Science
Agriculture

This month we have been learning all about chickens for our monthly charter lesson, so it was natural to do some experimenting with eggs.  First we collected a goose egg and a chicken egg to compare and contrast the two eggs.  Students experimented with how to tell the difference between a hard boiled egg and a raw egg and the buoyancy of a fresh vs old egg.

Stayed tuned for our monthly lesson to see more!

Making Bannock
FNMI

Not only is bannock a popular Indigenous food, but it also played an important part in our class read aloud Stranger at Home. As a class we thought it would be fun to try to make our own bannock. Our bannock making didn't go quite as planned but thankfully we were able to "fix it" with a little extra flour.

It was a fun way to wrap up a great book!

Earth Rangers
        Environment

Students were treated to an exciting presentation by Earth Rangers. They got an up close look at some exotic creatures. and learned how they could help protect these animals.

November 20-24

Rounding with our broiler chickens
Agriculture

The grade 4 class has been learning about rounding and estimating in math  class.  We looked at the labels from our broiler chickens  that were recently butchered and used them as a real life example on how we can we use rounding to estimate a cost. Students had to rounded the cost per kilogram and weight to determine to find the estimated total. Many were surprised  at how close their estimated calculation came to the actual price.

Community

We spent some time in the grade 1 classroom this week and had the opportunity to read to the grade 1's. Each grade 4 student took a small group of grade 1 students to read with, and some of the grade 1's had an opportunity to read to their grade 4 partner.  It was a fun way to practice fluency.

Its all in the details
Environment

We took our learning outside to get some inspiration  as we are practicing including details in our writing.  Students used their five senses to describe our outdoor landscape.

November 6-10

The role of Agriculture during the War
Agriculture

We spent our week focusing on Remembrance Day and the sacrifices that were made by those who fought and continue to serve so we could be free.  Students also earned how agriculture played a critical role in supporting both the military but also civilians during both WW1 and WW2. Many people planted victory gardens to supplement their food supplies and ease the strain on the food supply chain.

Community

We have been soaking up the sunshine and trying to spend as much time as possible outside this week. This means taking our lessons outside. and enjoying the natural sunlight and fresh air.

Taking care of our flying friends
Environment

We spent some time outdoors checking up on the bird feeders we made out of recycled materials a few weeks ago.  Together we analyzed the design and made adjustments to some of our bird feeders to allow for better access to the food and refilled the others.

October 30 - November 3

Predator and Prey
Agriculture

The grade 4 students played a fun game of predator and prey while learning all about the animals in our farmyard.  This gave students a better understanding  of why we need to make sure our animals have good cages to protect them from  prey .  Peaches the cat helped drive home this message to students  later in the week as staff found that Peaches had caught a baby weasel.

Making Paper
Innovation

The grade 4 class took recycling to the next level and made our own paper! First we researched the steps involved in recycling paper and watched a few videos to help understand the process, then it was time for students to get their hands dirty.  During and after the experiment students discussed what they could have done differently and would like to try if they made paper again. We also discussed how our paper varied from the paper you find in a store.

Outdoor Scavenger Hunt
Environment

On Halloween our class went on a scavenger hunt for treats. Special cards were hidden  around the outside of the school and playground area and students had to match a picture to a letter. They sorted their letters and used them to crack the code to find the hidden treats!

October 23-27

Rural vs. Urban
Agriculture

In Language Arts we have been learning about comparing and contrasting what we read. We decided to take our knowledge and apply it to Rural life vs. Urban life. Students used a Venn Diagram to compare the two and find compare how they were similar and contrast  their differences.

Clay for kids
Innovation

The grade 4's were busy sculping with Clay 4 kids on Thursday . Each student created  the Provincial Shield. This was a great tie in with social studies are we are currently learning about the different natural regions in Alberta. and the characteristics that  make it unique. Stay tuned to see the end result!

Pumpkin Day
Environment

Wednesday was Pumpkin Day in our classroom!  As a class we have studied the parts of a pumpkin,  and how it grows.  Each student predicted how much the pumpkin weighed (it was 10lbs!) and how many seeds would be in the pumpkin. After we made our predictions, we weighted and measured the circumference of the pumpkin and then students got to work scrapping out the "guts" and seeds. This was by far their favourite part! We also tried to get some help from the chickens to carve our pumpkins but they thought they were far too delicious to stop eating the small fleshy parts we had scrapped for them and instead attacked and ate almost half of our pumpkin in two short hours.

October 16 - 20

Paws, Hooves, Feet
Agriculture

Who walks here? As a class we discussed the animals (wild and domesticated) that we share our land with. We imagined and then drew what their prints might look like. Then we headed to the barnyard to get a closer look at the farm animals hooves, paws and feet and discussed their similarities and differences.

Recycled Bird feeders
Innovation

In science the grade 4 students have been studying how to reduce and reuse our waste. We found a great way to reuse old juice containers and wooden spoons  and repurposed them into bird feeders.

Agriculture

The whole school enjoyed a talk from Masterfeeds who discussed why it is important to add certain nutrients and vitamins to our farm animals diets.

Product Design
Innovation

In science grade 4's have been examining waste  and in particular waste generated from the packaging of products. The grade 4 class was challanged with designing a packaging machine that would create the least amount of waste while still protecting their product. Some things students had to take into consideration was the size of the product,  the best way to protect the product and what packaging had the least amount of impact on the environment.

Nature Art
Environmental

Students used items from the outdoors to create their own art.

October 2-6th

Agriculture

We were visiting our barnyard friends this week and helped load animal feed into the shed.  In science we have been learning about different types of packaging so it was great for students to see what is used to package animal feed. As a class we discussed the materials that the feed bags are made from and why.

What is the quickest way to ripen a tomato?
Innovation

What happens when you have to pick all your tomato's to save them from the frost and you are left with a bunch of green tomato's? Students researched the quickest way to ripen a tomoato and then they we conducted an experiment. Together as a class we decided upon 3 methods to test, a cold dark space, a warm sunny space and a tomato in a paper bag with a banana. Why a banana? Banana's release ethylene which is a gas that aids in the ripening process. We checked back on our tomatoes after 3 days and the tomato in the paper bag ripened the quickest followed by the the tomato in a warm sunny space.

 Leaves!
        Environmental

Students went on a nature walk to find some leaves. We examined the leaves and looked for unique features.  In art we are using these leaves as inspiration for a mixed media project using oil pastels, water colours and salt.

September 18-22

Pop Bottle Composter
Innovation - Environmental

In Science students are learning all about the different types of waste in our world and different ways to manage that waste. Together we made our own composter from a pop bottle. Students put different fruits and vegetables within the layers of pop bottle and we predicted how long each food item would take to decompse. We will be checking our composter each week to check its progress.

Checking Fields
Agriculture

Students went on a walk with Mrs. Bessler and investigated the different crops grown around our school. Together we examined a sheaf of wheat and and broke it open to find the wheat kernel. Students discussed common uses of wheat and we all agreed that using flour to make pizza was our favourite use of wheat.

September 11-14

  The steers have arrived!!!
Agriculture

We spent some extra time in the barnyard this week checking out the newest additions... steers!

   What does a compass do?
Innovation

In Social Studies the grade 4's are learning all about mapping including the importance of cardinal directions. We took our leaning outside and using compasses determined the orientation of the playground, barnyard and other features on our school property. Students then created their own maps of our school property.

             Recycle Crew
                    Environmental

The grade 4 class has taken over the recycling duties for the entire school.  Every week a group of grade 4 students will sort and collect all of they recyclable paper products and bottles and juice boxes. This is a great exercise and tie in with our science curriculum on Waste as we have a hand-ons look at how much waste we can keep out of  our the landfills and instead recycle!

September  4-8

Nature Walk
