About Me and My Portfolio

Hello, I'm Isabella, and I am a graduate of the Master of Arts in Foreign Language Teaching program at Michigan State University (MAFLT). I began teaching English as a foreign language at the primary and pre-K level in Japan in March of 2018. Presently, I still live and work as a K-5 English teacher in Japan. During my undergraduate study, I majored in Japanese language and literature and minored in graphic design.

Often my extensive background knowledge in these areas plays an integral part in how I instruct my students. Using a mix of cultural practices between standard English and Japanese communicative methods, I introduce my young learners to the ideology that negotiating their identity between their first and second language is based on more than their nationality. Furthermore, my extensive training in academics related to the liberal arts allows me to design lessons that bridge learning a foreign language through real-world relevant tasks such as creating holiday decorations and choreographing dances and plays.

This E-portfolio serves to provide a space for potential future employers, coworkers, students, and parents demonstrating my extensive and accredited knowledge in teaching a foreign language, the Japanese language, and dance.

One portion of my website that I would explicitly like to draw your attention towards is the experiential module section. Here, I present the free to enroll in, multimodal, online, 6-month long Japanese language proficiency test course, in which I, alone, designed and created all the course's curriculum and materials. Another portion of my website that I believe is important to review is the teaching video. In this video, as a viewer, one gets to experience what a typical day is like as a student in my classroom. The video also addresses the instructional methods that influence my lessons as a foreign language instructor.
