National Honor Society
2023-2024 Update:
This year’s National Honor Society Application Invitations were emailed to eligible senior and junior students Friday, October 13th at 2:15 PM. The email was sent from Mrs. Harris (Groninger), SAC and the subject line is, “ATTENTION REQUIRED RE: NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY ELIGIBILITY.” Students are responsible for checking their email for the invitation and the application information. Completed applications were due on November 13th at 2:15 PM.
The eligibility requirements are outlined below.
This year's Induction Ceremony was held at Matawan Regional High School on November 29th at 6 PM.
About Us
While NHS membership is a mark of academic achievement, it goes far beyond a report card. All student members must also reflect the program’s respective pillars to be inducted—ideals such as scholarship, service, leadership, and character—and they must continue demonstrating these pillars within their community throughout their membership.
Eligibility Requirements
Community service opportunities can be found here, here, School Service Google Classroom code y2onh53, and through various other MRHS Clubs.
Junior and senior students who are eligible to apply to the National Honor Society will receive an email invitation to apply from the Adviser in October. This email is only sent to students and it is the students' responsibility to check their email.
To qualify for consideration by Faculty:
Eligible junior and senior students will have earned a 3.800 weighted GPA or higher. For juniors, this is based off of the first two years of high school. For seniors, this is based off of their first three years of high school. GPAs are NOT rounded up under any circumstance. For example, a 3.799 will not be rounded up to a 3.800 and will not be considered.
Eligible students must complete the application in FULL.
Eligible students must submit validation of service, activities, leadership, and character:
Service (School or Community) – Active participation in an ongoing high school or community activity. Each activity must be verified on the community service log by an adult faculty or community leader. Peer signatures will not be accepted. The number of required community service hours may change at the discretion of the Advisers, but will always be up to date on this website.
The number of required community service hours for the 2024-2024 school year will be 60 (sixty) hours, updated on November 30th, 2023.
These hours may be from 9th grade through the submission of the application.
Required community service hours are due at the time of the application submission. The expectation is that students who are seeking membership to NHS are checking the website for the application requirements so that they are prepared for their junior/senior year if/when they become academically eligible.
Students must have at least two different community service activities listed.
Tutoring must be done through a district sponsored opportunity and regardless of # of students, tutoring counts as one activity
District sponsored opportunities include: Math/History/Science Tutorial, counselor coordinated tutoring, MOST Program, MAMS/Elementary Schools coordinated tutoring
Activities, Leadership, and Character – Students will be required to obtain exactly three completed Recommender Forms that will be reviewed with their application:
One recommender must be from a club, sport, or outside activity
The second recommender must be a teacher
The third must be an additional club, sport, outside activity, or teacher
Completed Recommender Forms will serve as proof of commitment and continuing involvement in different activities. All of the recommenders must recommend a student for membership. These forms must be completed by an adult supervisor, advisor, coach, and/or teacher in the school or the community who can best attest to the applicant’s involvement, character, and leadership who is not related to the applicant, and who interact with the applicant in a “professional” context. NHS Advisers and the Faculty Council will not share the Recommender Forms with the applicant.
Activities may include volunteer work, jobs, clubs, sports, tutorials (as a tutor), academic programs/academies (such as Civic Leadership), and performing arts.
A leader is someone who reaches out and takes initiative in his or her community, class, or organization. Among other qualities, leaders are proactive, strong communicators, good delegators, resourceful, creative, and have initiative and follow-through.
Character is reviewed in context of honesty, integrity, cooperation, reliability, and respecting school/activity rules and regulations. Disciplinary records within one calendar year of application will also be reviewed to ensure adherence to school rules and regulations. Applicants are able to discuss the circumstances of discipline within the calendar year on the final page of their application.
The Faculty Council will convene to review the applications of eligible candidates. It is to be understood that all records relating to behavior and observance of school and community rules, regulations, and laws will be examined. Confidentiality will be maintained at all times; however; students will be given reasons for their failure to pass final selection.
