Advanced Placement United States History

Summer Assignment 2019

Welcome to AP US History! We look forward to meeting you next fall and embarking on an exciting and in depth exploration of the history of our country. To prepare for this journey, we need you to begin reading the AP US History text. We have approximately 33 weeks during the school year to cover 32 chapters of the text. Covering some of the text over the summer allows us time to focus on specific issues during the school year. Additionally, this will allow our class some much needed review time for the AP test in May. You will also complete an AP US History Long Essay. Both of these assignments are to be handed in on Wednesday, September 4, 2019.

  • These assignments are not to be handed in before September 4th and will only be collected in class
  • Please keep in mind that AP US History final selections are determined by end of year grades and grades on the Global History Regents Exam.
  • PLEASE CALL THE GRADE REPORTING OFFICE (631.345.9207) after RECEIVING A MAILING FROM THE SCHOOL CONFIRMING YOUR ENROLLMENT IN AP US HISTORY. YOU MUST CALL AHEAD TO ARRANGE A TIME AND DATE TO GO TO THE GRADE REPORTING OFFICE WHERE YOU WILL BE GIVEN A TEXTBOOK
  • Receipt of this assignment does not guarantee your entry into the class

YOUR ASSIGNMENT

Part I

1. Over the summer months, you will be required to read Chapters 1-5 of your AP US History textbook, The American Pageant These five chapters combined equal approximately 100 pages of college level reading.

2. After you complete each chapter reading, you will be required to create 3-4 pages of original outline notes on each chapter. Practicing this will serve you well throughout the year.

Listed below are the specific requirements for each of the required chapter notes.

  • a. Five Chapters = 3-4 pages of notes per chapter. Please check the grading rubric for notes in this handout! Make sure you don’t overdo it. Writing 7-8 pages of notes will not be a useful study tool.
  • b. All of your notes must be handwritten, as neatly as possible. (Typed notes will not be accepted)
  • c. Paper size must be 8.5” x 11”.
  • d. All chapter notes should be stapled separately. No spiral notebooks or binders please!
  • e. All of your notes must be original or rephrased from the text. Obviously copying key words, sub-chapter headings, etc… is okay. However, simply copying large areas of text, definitions from a dictionary, timelines etc…will not be accepted. If you do so, your notes will be considered plagiarized, and you will receive a zero on this portion of your summer assignment.
  • f. Your notes should be your summary of the main concepts and terms from each chapter. Make sure to skip no more than 1 line when organizing your notes. Excessive spacing will result in the loss of points for this portion of the Summer Assignment.
  • g. You are required to hand in your notes on the second day of school, Wednesday, September 4, 2019
  • h. There will be an exam testing the information from these five chapters on Friday, September 6, 2019. You will be able to use your notes for the test.

Part II

AP US History is a writing intensive course, therefore we think it is imperative that you learn very quickly how to write an historical essay. Choose one of the following essays and answer all aspects of the task. We have included a detailed long essay scoring rubric from the College Board in this packet.

You are required to hand in the essay on Wednesday, September 4, 2019.

Choose one of the following:

  1. Compare and contrast the lifestyles, economic developments and political thought of New England colonists and the Chesapeake colonists. Be sure to support your answer with specific evidence.
  2. Identify the motives for exploration and characteristics of the permanent settlements established by Spain, France, and England on the North American mainland in the early 17c.

Be sure to:

  • develop a thesis
  • support that thesis with appropriate historical evidence
  • use your analytical skills in constructing your answer
