Team 'Ōpe'ape'a and 2021 First Grade Students

On November 8 & 12, we did our first-grade presentation. The first graders were so engaged and had so many questions to ask us about the 'Ōpe'ape'a and about our team. We did a little Kahoot after our presentation and they got to listen to an Echolocation song we found on YouTube. They had so much fun learning about the 'Ōpe'ape'a and loved the stickers we made for them.

"Save Kalani" is a game made by Team  'Ō pe'ape'a team member Kaizen. The objective of Save Kalani is to avoid Windmills which are one of the biggest threats to Hawaiian Hoary Bats.  By pressing the space bar, or by tapping on your touch screen you can save Kalani by flying over the windmills and getting him home.

Team 'Ōpe'ape'a Teaches First Grade

On March 8th and March 9th, we taught first grade all about the 'Ōpe'ape'a. We couldn't teach them in class due to Covid-19 but we did it virtually and even played a little Kahoot. Although we were really nervous and it was our first time doing this presentation virtually, the first graders loved it and we had so much fun.

Team 'Ōpe'ape'a and Distance Learning

On October 21 2020,  Team 'Ōpe'ape'a had their first zoom meeting. Although it was a small team, we thought on how we would make a comeback due to Covid-19 and how we could get more members to educate people. Our old and new members will be attending our next meeting, so we can plan on our next events and projects.

Foraging Nights and Science

On February 27th, Team ʻŌpeʻapeʻa went to Kula Community Center for a foraging night. Sciende team did a project that involved using lights to see what color lights attract more bugs.  On February 28th, Team ʻŌpeʻapeʻaʻs science team collected moths that were still alive from the pervious night.

Team 'Ōpe'ape'a and Team Agreements

On February 5th, Team 'Ōpe'ape'a took our pictures with our team agreements. The agreements are made to be a prop we could take a picture with, made from our team members in the art group of our team.

Foraging Night

Team ʻŌpeʻapeʻa went to Kula Community Center on November 26 2018 and caught the leftovers of the 'Ōpe'ape'a. We have preserved them in a bottle to show to the rest of the team in our next meeting.

Stickers for the 'Ōpe'ape'a

On November 22 2019, our science, art, and culture teams gather up and start making 100 stickers for our protectors on O'ahu.

Tech-night

Team 'Ōpe'ape'a attended the Kamehameha Schools Tech-night on November 8th 2019, and presented our research on the 'Ōpe'ape'a and answered questions on the 'Ōpe'ape'a.  The team was very excited to share our work with people attending the activity.

Team ʻŌpeʻapeʻa Educates 1st Graders

Our Kula Waena 'Ōpe'ape'a Team went up to our Kula Ha'aha'a Campus and taught 1st grade. We taught them about the 'Ōpe'ape'a and the damage we are doing to them and the dangers they face in the world. We had Sonny Sing-Kahalehau dress up as our mascot, Kalani The Bat. We also went on a scavenger hunt to find the Hydrophobic Invisible Bat Stencils around the upper campus.

By Kepa Cabanas

On September 14th, members of the Ope'ape'a, Kamalu Wing, Kumu Kekaula, and Kepa Cabanas participated in the Hui Noʻeau Art Show. Kamalu drew a picture of a bat warrior. Kumu Kekaula carved a Hawaiian flag with little 'Ōpe'ape'a. Kepa Cabanas designed  a bug control can with informational facts about the 'Ōpe'ape'a. We are very proud of their designs and the opportunity to spread awareness through the Mālama Wao Akua exhibit.

Future Outreach Plans

In the future, we plan to collaborate with Haleakala National Park on a brochure. We are also planning on presenting at the Wildlife Refuge Presentation.
