What to Expect
Introduction to Engineering Design
IED provides students the opportunity to become experts in the engineering design process by applying their decision-making skills to real-world, project-based problems. Students use powerful computer hardware and software to develop 3D models or solid renderings of objects. Using a Computer-Aided Design System, students learn the product design process through creating, analyzing, rendering, and producing a model. The techniques learned, and equipment used, are currently being used by engineers throughout the United States and can be applied to all other STEM disciplines.
Complete all necessary courses
On each of the pathway pages, you will find the required coursework needed in order to complete the pathway. Please keep in mind each pathway is unique, and you may find other courses beneficial to your study other than the ones listed. Please reach out to your guidance counselor and the STEM Director with any questions.
Capstone Experience
This capstone experience is an engineering research project in which students design and develop an original solution to a community-centered technical problem by applying the engineering design process. Students will be responsible for developing their research project design, carrying it out, and analyzing and presenting their findings to a panel at the end of the year. Students have the option of completing this capstone project in one of the following ways described below.
To earn the appropriate STEM Pathway diploma endorsement, students must:
Must be enrolled in STEM Pathways Capstone Experience.
Routes to complete STEM Pathway Capstone Experience (must complete one of the three options below):
Successful completion of one of the CHS AP Capstone courses with a STEM focused project (Grade 11 - AP Seminar & Grade 12 - AP Research, Engineering Design and Development EDD course), OR
Successful completion of CHS's Concentrated Studies Program with an approved STEM related focus, OR
Successful completion of a student proposed STEM related project (with approval of STEM Director) that includes evidence based decision making research to drive solutions and develop explanations.
Must successfully complete the STEM Pathways Capstone Experience Presentation with passing marks from the STEM committee.
