Circuit Analysis

Total Credits: 4 , Stage: Second, Module Convenor: Mr. Farhad M. Mahmood

Prerequisites: An understanding of Electricity and Magnetism , and Calculus.

Summary of Content: This module provides the understanding of the physical world necessary to undertake modules in the second year of degree courses in the College of Science-Department of Physics and includes:

  • Circuit theory and passive components
  • An introduction to electric and magnetic fields

Education Aims: The course will give the basic understanding and knowledge of electrical networks and mathematical methods for analysis of linear models. The course is an essential base for further studies in many different areas such as Electronics and Electromagnetic.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this module, students should be able to,

  • describe properties of passive and active components
  • explain concepts in the mathematical model used for description of the circuits
  • identify the most common passive and active circuits and describe their properties
  • apply the solution methods such as nodal analysis and mesh analysis
  • use superposition and two-terminal equivalents
  • solve transient problems in switching circuits
  • master AC steady state analysis using phasors
  • be acquainted with graphical solution techniques for nonlinear components
  • choose a proper method of solution
  • verify the solution
  • design an electrical model of a simple system
  • use simulation software (PSIM).

Method of Assessment: First semester (20 marks) 2 Hour exam, Second semester (20 marks) 2 Hour exam. ten marks will be devoted to the class activities, Solution of problem sheet and course work or coursework .The rest of other marks (50 marks) will be dedicated to the final exam.

Course Material and Lecture notes: students can download the handouts and lecture note through the following links, because no hard copy (paper copy) will be given during the lectures, so it the responsibility of the students to check the availability of the lecture notes online. I will try my best to upload the lectures file at least a day before the lecture date. furthermore, additional resources and reference book will be provided to the students in the same way.

Important Note: some of the lecture notes , problem and solution sheets are confidential ( restricted to the Physics department students due to the privacy and policy of department, so please be aware for accessing some of the file you must have a password in advance, which would be given to the students during the lecture time, if you have any difficulties or concern regarding this, do not hesitate to contact me by email: farhad.mahmood@halabjauni.org

Course Material files: to get the handout just click the underlined week.

List of Reading:

student can access and download the list of resources which they are beneficial for this module, just click the underlined references then you would be able to download them.
