How to Introduce Sight Words
Introduce sight words five at a time. As a word is mastered replace it with a new word. Be sure to praise your child for mastery. There are many ways to reinforce the sight words. Some are listed below:
- I Spy - Look for the words in books, magazines and signs.
- Games - Donkey, Word Concentration, Go Fish, Word Swat
Donkey - Pick a card. If you can read the card you keep it. If not place it back in the pile. Play continues until all the cards are gone. Extension - Say the word and use it in a sentence.
Word Concentration - Find two sight words that match. Say the word. Extension - Use the word in a sentence.
Go Fish - Fish for a word and say it.
Word Swat - Partner A calls the word. Partner B swats the word. If partner B does not recognize the word he loses a turn. Play continues until word cards are gone.
Flashcards - Words are read in a minute to build fluency. Each time the number of words read is record.
