Important Things to Know

Assignment Pads

Please check your child’s assignment pad each day and sign at the bottom. This lets me know that you know what homework your child has, any up coming test, quizzes, or projects, and/or any notes from me. If you need to contact me, please feel free to use the assignment pad to let me know, as I check these daily. Students who get their assignment pad signed consistently will not have to solve their problem at recess.

Homework/Info Folder

Please check your child’s folder daily for items of interest. Homework side will have any homework sheets, info for you to fill out and return, or C/R’s placed in it. Info side is any information concerning the school, our class, PTA, community events, and graded work. Please clean out the folder daily as there are many days when lots of papers are sent home. Graded papers are sent home weekly so that you can immediately see how your child is learning. Please let your child know you expect them to bring these home as soon as they receive them and not to stuff them in their desk or hide them.

Weekly Homework

Your child will have spelling homework most weeks. They will receive a sheet with a list of words on their newsletter.

Most weeks your child will have a story to read from their reading book. On Thursdays they will take a test on the skills they have practiced and comprehension questions pertaining to the story.

Most nights your child will have math homework. It will either be a sheet, problems assigned by the teacher, or problems from their math book.

Tests/Quizzes

Tests and most quizzes will be announced ahead of time. Please look at your child’s newsletter and/or assignment pad for dates and any changes. Your child may have an unannounced pop quiz from time to time to assess retention of materials and the need for further instruction. Pop quizzes will not be given on newly introduced material, but are a good way for your child to see if they are grasping the instruction already taught and if they need to either study more or pay attention better.

Review sheets for tests in subjects such as Social Studies and Science will be given at least a 5 days before the test. Use these sheets and notes as a study guide. It really helps narrow down what your child should focus on for the test.

Supplies

Most children should have their supplies that were on the supply list or have already done so. Please make sure your child has the following:

small pencil sharpener with cover, two boxes of 24 ct crayons, #2 pencils, highlighter, glue sticks, 5" sharp scissors, 2 red ball point checking pens, supply box, 1 inch binder, colored or white copying paper, tissue boxes, and 1 pack of dry eraser markers(not washable please). Please check your child's supplies throughout the year to make sure they have not run out. Not having supplies makes it difficult for your child to complete work in a timely manner and stay focused on the lesson. Please no large notebooks, trapper keepers, or rolling book bags (THESE ITEMS WILL BE SENT HOME).

Incomplete Work

Students who fail to complete homework and/or class work due to irresponsibility will complete this work at another time or the paper will be graded as is. This is not used as a means of punishment but rather as a way to teach them that learning and being responsible for ones own actions are important.

Recess is scheduled for most days from 12:40-1:00. Your child knows what the playground rules are and what expectations Plain has on behavior. Occasionally they may have to come see me to discuss a problem they had during the day. They are expected to tell what the problem was, why it was a problem, and how to solve it (if they have trouble, I help them with suggestions). Getting students to recognize that they are responsible for the choices they make and can fix a problem if it occurs is a great way in helping them become good problem solvers.

Absences/Tardies/Early Dismissals

If your child is absent, tardy, or needs an early dismissal, please write a note. This note is sent to the office for their records. A while you were out sheet will be written for your child that will tell what work they missed and will need to make up. Any work that says at school can not be sent home. Your child has 5 days to make up the work. After that, it is counted as a 0. If you know you’re your child will be out and would like work sent home, please call the school before 12:00 so I can get it ready. I will be happy to send it up to the office or send it home with a class mate, sibling, or friend. I

Conferences

I am available for conferences on most days from 7:20-7:40 or between 3:00 and 4:15 (Mon., Tues., and Thurs.). Meeting during regular teaching time and does not allow me to give you my undivided attention as the students are in need of supervision and direction and usually interrupt any discussion that might take place. Therefore, please choose one of the above times and days so we can have a more productive conference.

If you need to contact me, writing a note in your child's assignment pad is a good because these are checked every day.
