You may have heard from your son/daughter that I have been out of school for medical reasons. My colleagues in second grade have made sure my lessons plans have been completed. I will return to school on Thursday, September 7th.

Academic Progress

Students have been participating daily in multiple reading lessons, math, and writing. Already, we are seeing some growth. Homework change:

Your child has shown they can access both at school.

August 2021

This has been a wonderful week! I am getting to know your children better and determining what skills they need to work on.  Thursday, I sent home a packet of some reading/phonics papers and a math paper. They are NOT homework pages. Because of the approaching inclement weather, we were asked to provide materials in case we need to be virtual on Tuesday. I also asked students to bring their computers home as well. Should we need to go virtual, I will post the link on Class Dojo. In the next week or so, I will also prepare a Google Classroom for our room.

This week we worked on how to handle the hard words when we read. We talked about chunking the word, reading in context, looking at visuals. We also practiced CVC words. In math, we began a new unit on adding and subtraction 1-20. We are using ten frame models and number lines.

We continued to work on on our opinion writing this week as well. We have moved on from essay format to letter writing. The children has some wonderful ideas. They would like more recess time, more choices in the cafeteria, short school weeks, new pets, etc.

In Social Studies we have been discussion the past and present. We are concentrating on South Carolina. This week we begin to learn about maps.

Students earned a trip to the treasure box this week as well as a special activity. We read "The Gingerbread Man" and "The Gingerbread Boy". I brought in salt clay for each student to make a gingerbread. I am baking them this weekend and they will paint them next Friday!

You will see flash cards in student backpacks on Tuesday. Many students need to work on high frequency words. I am hoping they can spend 5 to 10 minutes daily practicing these words.

I hope you all enjoy the four days off!

IMPORTANT; I HAVE ASKED YOUR CHILDREN TO FIND OUT WHAT FIRST GRADE WAS LIKE FOR A GRANDPARENT. IF THEY ARE ABLE PLEASE HAVE THEM CONTACT A GRANDPARENT AND WRITE DOWN 3 ITEMS ABOUT FIRST GRADE FOR THEIR GRANDPARENT.

What a wonderful first week with your children it has been. I have been getting to know your children and they are getting aquainted with me.

In reading, we have been learning how to decifer words we don't know. Students are learning strategies to decode the word and understand it in context.

We have been enjoying some independent reading time and next week we will get some new reading buddies.

Our writing is focused on learning how to write an opinion writing piece. Please ask your youngster about the book "I wanna Iguana". This was a great mentor text for us. Students learned how a little boy convinced his parent to allow him to have a pet iguana.

In math, we are finishing up our unit on shapes and patterns. Students have been exploring shape attributes and creating repetitive patterns.

In social studies, we are discovering Greenville long ago and comparing it to present day. We have explored the history of the Swamp Rabbit Rail that later became the Swamp Rabbit Trail.

Next week:

Grades close on January 13th

January 14th is a Professional Day, no school for students!

January 17th is Martin Luther King Day-no school for students!
