Grading Procedures:

The following is the Greenville County School District Grading Policy for the 2017-2018 school year:

Grading System:

ACTIVE CLASS PARTICIPATION: 1 grade per class session

The following may be included within this category: students’ on-task attention, following directions, work with other students, taking care of materials/instruments, wise use of time on projects, minor quizzes or projects, homework or required outside projects

STANDARDS-BASED ASSESSMENTS: 2 per grading period

Included within this category are larger or more formal standards-based projects performances, portfolios or group-based activities based on rubrics or established guidelines within the discipline.

Students in Kindergarten through 5th Grade:

M = meets expectation/sometimes demonstrates

P = does not meet expectation

Assessment is mainly attained through teacher observation of participation, concept, and skills developments according to state and national music standards. Grades are kept daily in the record sheet, then placed in PowerTeacher at the end the grading term (total of 9 weeks per term for a total of 36 weeks a year). Parents are notified at mid-term progress reports to students making grades of P.


SC State Music Standards

1. Music Performance: The student will sing and perform on instruments, alone and with others, a variety of music.

2. Creating Music: The student will improvise, compose, and arrange music within specified guidelines.

3. Music Literacy: The student will read and notate music.

4. Critical Response to Music: The student will listen to, describe, analyze, and evaluate music and music performances.

5. History and Culture: The student will examine and perform music from a variety of stylistic and historical periods and cultures.

6. Making Connections: The student will make connections between music, other arts disciplines, other content areas, and the world.


National Music Standards

Standard 1 - Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.

Standard 2 - Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.

Standard 3 - Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments.

Standard 4 - Composing and arranging music within specified guidelines.

Standard 5 - Reading and notating music.

Standard 6 - Listening to, analyzing, and describing music.

Standard 7 - Evaluating music and music performances.

Standard 8 - Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.

Standard 9 - Understanding music in relation to history and culture.
