What is ESOL?

This stands for: English Speakers of Other Languages. But the students are referred to as EL's (English Learners). If a student's home language survey states another language other than English in any of the questions, the ESOL teacher is required to screen them. This will identify the students who qualify for the program where they are given additional support to improve the development of their english skills. In the spring, the students will take the ACCESS test to determine what level they have achieved and perhaps even exit the program. If they do exit the program, they are monitored for 4 years to ensure they are doing well. Students may either be pulled out for small group instruction or the ESOL teacher may push in to the classroom to assist. This depends on the schedules, needs and availability of the teachers.
