What We are Learning

ELA: We will begin our year by setting up our reading and writing workshop blocks. I will assess your child's current knowledge, so I can better meet them where they are and build their knowledge.

Unit 1: We will focus on different types of narrative nonfiction, including autobiographies, biographies, and magazine articles. Our unit focus will include author's purpose, main idea/details, text structure, and text features. Within grammar, we will focus on writing complete sentences, by identifying the subject and predicate as well as if a sentence is complete, a fragment, or a run-on. For writing, we will focus on elements of poetry and developing a personal narrative.

Math: Unit 1 will focus on place value, addition, and subtraction. We will also discuss the relationship between places and how to round.

Science: Our first unit is a mini-unit where we will learn about the science and engineering principals and the crosscutting concepts in science. Then we will embark on our study of energy resources.

Social Studies: We will discuss the settlement of the United States and the formation of the colony groups.
