When will my student see the school counselor?

I see students in many different ways every single day whether it's in the hallway or at afternoon back car duty. I also see students in the classroom, individually, or in small groups.

In the classroom we discuss various character education topics (bullying, anxiety, career exploration, personal safety, and kindness/ compassion.

Small groups will be based on teacher recommendation and a permission form will be sent home before the student can participate. Small groups are used when there are several students struggling with the same skill or problem. Topics may include grief, divorce, social skills, study skills, self-esteem, among others.

Individual counseling is typically done by teacher or student referral. Students are able to fill out an "I need to see the counselor" form or their teacher can refer them if they see issues in the classroom. If I find that further and more in depth counseling is needed, I can refer the student to our Mental Health Counselor.

Please know that each student is entitled to confidentiality and trusts me to do so. I am not able to discuss what we talk about with other students, parents, or staff. I tell all my students that the only time I am able to break confidentiality is if they threaten to harm themselves, threaten to harm others, or if someone is harming them.
