The goals of International Baccalaureate (IB-VA) Visual Arts are for students to explore and critically respond to: the aesthetic qualities of visual arts, the relationship between form and meaning, the social and cultural functions of visual arts, and the socio-‐cultural and historical contexts of other cultures.

IB ART SYLLABUS

Course Description: IB  Visual Art. Sl2, HL1, HL2

IB Visual Arts is a thought-provoking course in which students develop analytical skills in learning about art and making connections to their own art, while working towards technical proficiency and confidence as artists. In addition to exploring and comparing visual arts from different perspectives and in different contexts, students are expected to engage in, experiment with, and critically reflect upon a wide range of contemporary practices and media.

This course is for students who want to go on to study visual arts in higher education as well as those seeking lifelong enrichment through visual arts.


Objectives:

In this class the student will be assessed in three major areas. They will produce a Comparative Study presentation containing research of two artists and specific artworks. They will build a Process Portfolio presentation which will cover the research of how and why their personal artworks were created. They will design a themed series of their which will be presented at a formal Exhibition at the end of the course. Examples from all three areas will be submitted to IB for final analysis and scoring at the end of the course.

 


Course Structure:

Standard Level 1 Year, Higher Level 2 Years


BIG IDEAS:

This course focuses on big ideas of IB Visual Arts.


Standards:

1- The student will demonstrate competence in the use of ideas, materials, techniques, and processes in the creation of works of visual art.

2- The student will use composition and the elements and principles of design to communicate ideas.

3- The student will examine the content of works of visual art and use elements from them in creating his or her own works.

4- The student will understand the visual arts in relation to history and world cultures and the technologies, tools, and materials used by artists.

5- The student will analyze and assess the characteristics and qualities of their own works of visual art and those of others.

6- The student will make connections between the visual arts and other arts disciplines, other content areas, and the world.

Assessments:

Assessments are based on project production, Process Portfolio entries and meeting deadlines given to those two components. Students will also receive progress grades and hard deadline grades.

Grading policy:

60% major assessments (projects & hard deadlines), 40% minor assessments (process portfolio entries and hard deadlines) A=100-90 B= 80 - 89

C=70 - 79 D= 60 - 69

Attendance Policy:

Absences in High School are accrued per course. Any absence in excess of 5 may cause the student to lose credit for this A-B year long course. Absences that are medical (doctor notes), bereavement, and/or Principal Approved are not included in the maximum absences.

Communication Protocols: The students check google classroom for the agenda for the week, materials, and assignments. My office hours are 4th block and I can be reached by appointment before or after school. (864-355-3045 or mhamby@greenville.k12.sc.us)

Academic Policies and Procedures:

 Assignments should be submitted on the given due date. Late work drops by 20 points a day for up to 3 days. Anything after day three has a maximum grade of 40.  Late work due to absence may be turned in within 5 days of student’s return without penalty.

Classroom Routine:

1.Enter class quietly, check out the promethean board for directions, take out materials

2.The bell assignment is to be completed in the minutes before the tardy bell and

the first five minutes of class.

3.The teacher will present the lesson beginning with lecture and demonstration

and followed by studio time.

4.After studio time the students will clean work stations and put away materials.

5.The teacher will dismiss students at the end of class.

Consequences

Violations of any of the above expectations will result in negative consequences such as parent contact and disciplinary referrals.

 


Required Supplies: 

 Students will have designated cubbies or shelves for their personal  supplies.
