COURSE DESCRIPTION

Seventh grade students will study Earth from a regional perspective, focusing on the continents. Students will study contemporary places and regions to identify how the experiences of people are rooted in places and organized into geographic regions. This course focuses on human systems and the sum of human activities and characteristics across the Earth's surface. Instruction should utilize the geographic thinking skills and themes developed in the 2019 South Carolina Social Studies College and Career Ready Standards. These standards are aligned with the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate in order to promote world-class skills and knowledge. Instruction should include inquiry-based learning in which students apply geography literacy and skills to current world issues.

PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of previous grade or social studies course.

COURSE MATERIALS


Students will also need the following materials:

· Chromebook (provided by school)

· Loose leaf, lined notebook paper (no spiral notebooks)

· 1 three ring binder provided by the school.

· Pencils (if mechanical make sure you have extra lead)

· Headphones / Earbuds (optional)

· Journal or notebook

Grading Procedures/Policies

Students are expected to do their very best on all assignments throughout the grading period regardless of their current grade average in the class.

Grading Scale:

A 100-90

B 89-80

C 79-70

D 69-60

F 50-below

Major Assessments and Compositions = 50 %

Minor Assessments = 50 %

Makeup work is due as soon as soon as possible but no later than five (5) days from the point of an EXCUSED absence. It is YOUR responsibility to make up all work that is missed, including class work, quizzes, and tests. Students and parents can review student grades on the parent portal and student backpack.

CLASSROOM RULES AND EXPECTATIONS

Students should come to class on time, and prepared for learning each day. Students should have all materials necessary to be productive in class (pencil, chromebook, homework, etc). When entering the classroom, students should be seated in their assigned seats and quietly working on the warm up assignment located on google classroom or on board. Students should be respectful to the teacher and their classmates at all times. Specific procedures for classroom functioning are posted within the classroom for all students.

CLASSROOM POLICIES

Homework: Classwork is expected to be complete by the end of class. Parents and students may access the teacher’s website each week to receive information about homework and upcoming content in class. The website will be updated weekly.

Absent and Make-up Assignments: If a student misses work due to absence, the student will have five (5) school days to complete any make-up work. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain missed assignments after an absence. Tests and quizzes must be taken as soon as possible and during the school day (i.e. Flex time)

Retake Policy: Students will have the opportunity to retake quizzes and tests to learn and demonstrate understanding to the fullest extent. Students will be able to retake an assessment with a score of 69 or lower (this is any assessment lower than a 70 (C)). Students will be given the opportunity to retake any assessment prior to the end of each marking period (before report card grade submission). All class grades (including retake assessments) must be turned in at least three (3) days before grades are due.
