Apple Rhythms: Notes and Rests

In the fall, we sang songs about apples and learned about notes and rests. We picked and sorted the quarter notes and rests off of the tree. Then, we put quarter rests in the empty spaces to show when to rest our hands when we played along with the song "Apple Tree."

Afterward, we practiced identifying and notating the rhythms of the different leaves in the story, and we shared and sang with leaves from the story were our favorite.

Monster Music
Daisie, Lucy, Sahana, Nora, and Samantha
As we sang along to the book Monster Trouble, we found out that there is one thing that monsters hate--kisses! So, we found all of the monsters with half-note rhythms and gave them a big smooch! Then, we fed a monster 4 beats of notes and rests to create a rhythm.

We explored the traditions and music of Diwali, A Festival of Lights. We danced and colored a diya as we identified different music notes and rests. Then we made a connection between Diwali and the song "This Little Light of Mine." We shared ways that we let our light, the good in us, shine and sang about it.

We pretended to skip through the apple orchard as we sang
apple-themed songs and shook our apples for two beats when we sang half notes in the music. Afterward, we identified different notes and composed 8-beat rhythms.
The Nutcracker: Overture

We joined Jake the dog on an adventure to the ballet studio! There, we practiced the five basic ballet positions and heard the story of The Nutcracker. After the story, we moved rhythmically to the ballet's "overture" and acted out different characters from the ballet. Then, we mapped out the music's form, plan, and shared which character we enjoyed performing the most.

Songs and Stories of the Cherokee
Spoorthi, Jonas, Carly, and Inessa
Listening to and learning to sing using pitches of the pentatonic scale and in the Cherokee language was a challenge, but we were up to the task! We made connections to what we learned about Native Americans in social studies and practiced drumming different Cherokee words in the story We Are Grateful. Then we performed a song in Cherokee and created our own lyrics to sing to the melody about what we are grateful for.

Listening and Responding to Holst's The Planets
Angella, Payton H., Aroush, Jacob, Victoria, Madison, and Coen
We learned about the composer Gustav Holst and his piece The Planets. We each chose a planet's movement to listen to and analyze. We identified instruments used throughout the music, along with the dynamics, and tempo--the volume and speed of the music. Then, we colored a listening glyph of the planet to show what we heard.
Out of this World Pizza Rhythms!

We learned about astronaut Dr. Ellen Ochoa as we listened to and sang along with the story The Astronaut with a Song for the Stars, and we heard her play the flute in space!
We practiced identifying and writing rhythms using pizza toppings and discovered that astronauts have enjoyed making pizza in space!

We laughed at singing aliens as they observed the sneaking, hiding, vibrating creature on our strange planet. Then we took their observations and turned them into melodies using the pentatonic scale. We notated them on the staff and on Chrome Music Lab's Song Maker to hear what they sounded like.
A New Discovery, Planet Oobadabadee!

After singing and moving along to the silly song "I Am an Alien," we pretended to explore the planet Oobadabadee to see what it looked like and reported back on the planet's music.
The Nutcracker: Cocoa, Coffee, and Hot Tea!

We spent the day at the Kerechanin Cafe as we listened to selections from Pytor Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker Ballet. We became choreographers as we created dance moves for spoons to dance to the piece "Chinese Hot Tea." We used oven mitts, cocoa cups, and spoons to dance to the A and B sections of "Spanish Hot Chocolate," and chose yoga movements to perform with "Arabian Coffee." We also picked out notes and rests from the cafe menu to create our own 4 beat rhythms.

As autumn breezes began to blow, we listened to seasonal music and created visuals to reflect the music that we heard. We sang " I Can See the Breeze" and chanted the poem "Who Has Seen the Wind."
