We experienced music, songs, samba dancing from the South American country of Brazil. We improvised new words to sing to tell the story of what Mama Paquita has no money to buy, and we were challenged to make and decorate our own shaker instruments using household objects.

Musical Scavenger Hunt
To reinforce students' science unit on sound energy, we focused on how sound is produced, travels, and creates pitch and volume. Students went on a scaverger hunt to find things around their houses that make sounds similar to a variety of different instruments.

Landfill Harmonics
Students were inspired by the music and instruments of the Landfill Harmonic, a youth orchestra in Paraguay whose instruments are made from materials found in the local landfills. They were challenged to find items around the house to reuse and recycle to create their own instrument. Students shared their instruments and how their instruements produced pitch and/or volume according to science.

"Somos el Barco," Melody, Rhythm, and Rhyme
We discovered the poetic qualities that many songs have as we analyzed the song, "Somos el Barco." Students practiced playing the song's melody using the virutal xylophone and then created their own lyrics, based on the rhythm and rhyme scheme of the song's original lyrics.
